Snorkeling-Buy or rent?

All of the rental equip I have seen is always clean (as for sterilized, don't know). You can get a good mask, fins and snorkel for about $80 at a local dive shop or on line. If you plan to do it more than a few times, it is worth having your own gear.

I bought my own several years ago. Just mask & snorkel, easy to pack and no worries about whose mouth it has been in.

Agree with all above. After seeing the extent of the sanitation of the rental gear at Cinnamon Bay on St. John - dunking the snorkels in a barrel of water, then hanging them back up - we bought our own. If possible, go to a dive shop and get help with getting a mask that fits, though. They are not all the same, and this is another of those "you get what you pay for" deals - an ill fitting mask can ruin your experience. Go for a snorkel with a purge valve too. Have fun!

ABSOLUTELY bu your own snorkels. The "disinfection" consists of plunging the snorkels in a barrel containing some unknown material. No wonder viruses are rampant on cruise ships. We bought our snorkels and masks at a local dive shop- only about $35 and they can fit you correctly so water doesn't seep in the mask. Ditto the advice about the purge valve-much easier to keep water out of your mouth. And finally, don't forget to rinse your equipment with FRESH water when you get back to the ship. We made the mistake of not doing so and the salt deposits had to be removed professionally by the dive shop. HAVE FUN!!

Roy just bought me a new snorkel for our cruise next week. It was no bargain; he wanted me to have a "good one" and I already have a decent mask. I trust my hubby with the equipment because he has a lot of scuba experience. I decided I didn't want to rent equipment because like all the posts above I don't want to catch any viruses.

Costco and Sam's club have good prices on snorkel sets now. Under $50 with carry bag.

My vote. Buy your own, use it 3 times and its paid for vs. renting. definitely worth it. If anytjing, at least buy a mask/snorkel and rent fins. Fins take up a lot of room in luggage.
