SNORKELING EQUIPMENT.

Does anyone have information on the snorkeling equipment provided by the excursion companies for outings in the Carribean? Has anyone rented it in Princess Cays? We were thinking about buying a $20 mask/snorkel at home and bringing it with us instead of renting. After all, how many mouths have been put on one snorkel? Seems kind of unsanitary.

We take our snorkel equipment with us on all Carib vacations...I'm a nurse and while I know they sterilise them, there is just enough in me to not be thrilled about anybodies germs but ours sooooo..I pack ours to go..sigh..I know there are plenty who do not..but I bring my own..=huh...:)...Joanne

Depends on you and your priorities/sensibilities. We used to pack a lot more stuff--including snorkel gear, but now take as little as possible. So far, we haven't had any ill effects from using the gear provided. I ALWAYS redunk the gear in the tub of cleanser but who knows if THAT is all that clean! My guess is that most germs don't live all that long on the rubber surfaces--but maybe that's a bad assumption on my part. Bottom line--if it gives you pause, take your own stuff--the $20 masks work just fine. In addition, in many ports and on board you can usually purchase this gear, but on board stocks tend to be limited, so if you just can't jam in your gear into your luggage, you may be able to purchase it on vacation.

We just bought our own last month. I'm so glad we did. Now we have masks that fit our particular face, snorkels that haven't been slobbered on by other swimmers and it doesn't take that much packing space. As someone said above, it's about priorities. To us, it was a priority and we plan to use them a lot in the future.

The best advice I got on this board re: snorkel equip. is to try it on first. If we hadn't, my 11 yr. old would've gotten the wrong size mask (he needed an adult size!).
