Sold out tours?

Just curious if the "lesser" Alaskan tours also sell out. We will definately prebook the Skagway Train excursion but what about the trolleys and gold mining? Family is thinking they'd like to wait and wing it but I'm a planner...

Thanks, Julie

lesser tours do not always sell out. They can sell out but it is not as likely. Many of the things that sell out are the White Pass Railway, flight tours, whale watches, Yukon tours, raft and kayaking tours. I'm not sure how popular trolleys and gold mining tours are. I have seen the trolleys full of people but seeing they take multiple trips not sure if they sell out.

Does the White Pass Train generally sell out? When I contacted the vendor (via e-mail), they recommended we book thru cruise ship and that it was only minimally more ($5 or 10) to do so. Their reasoning to book thru ship is that ship has most of the seats reserved and the pick-up point is right on the docks.

Pick up point for the ship tours is at the pier. Each cruise line has several cars on the train. They can add some cars if needed but they can only add so many do to the steepness and weight of the train climbing the mountains. If you want to take the White Pass Railway, which has some incredible views, book as soon as you can through the cruise line if that is what you want to do. Yes the cruise line price is close to the regular price for the train. If you book on your own you have to walk into town and start at the depot if the train is full you may be out of luck.

Find out how many other ships will be in port at the same time as you are. That will make a real difference as to whether or not an excursion is 'sold out'. If your ship is the only one it town - you're fairly safe to wait until you get there. But if there are 3 other ships in town - book ahead!

There should be a site for Skagway's Visitor's and / or Convention Center. If you can find it, see if there is a link to "Cruise Ships" and look for the Cruise Ship calendar for the date you will be visiting. That will tell you how many ships are in that day.

Thanks so much boatluver! I did check the calendar and we will be one of five ships in port that day--that is great information to have. I was so on lthe fence about booking the WhitePass Railway in advance but now I'm very happy I did. With that many ships in port it's bound to sell out.

Jam,
What link did you go to to find out how many ships are docked with you?
