Some Perspective

I think I've written here about my cousin's wife who is nearing the end of her battle with cancer. She is 33, and they have 3 children under the age of 10. Her battle and faith have been courageous! She is having surgery next week to try to extend her life and get some relief from some symtoms.

I know there are many here with struggles of their own, and I hope this doesn't come across negatively, but I wanted to share. This quote from her e-mail made me realize that if they can be thankful in their circumstances, than certainly I can be thankful in my own:

"We REALLY can't begin to thank everyone for how special they make us feel. We are just like everyone else trying to survive, and do not deserve all of the blessings our friends, family, and God have given us through this all.

May God bless you all as richly as He's blessed us, too! (It's not what any of us asked for, But since when do we get everything on our Christmas list? We take what God gives us, and we are grateful."

Cycofan, I was just composing in my mind a journal entry about this very thing. It will be located in the 'bits of joy' section. To me this cancer battle is not only physical, but also a spiritual battle for me. Facing the ravages of any chronic or terminal illness tests our true relationship with God on a daily basis. A couple of the 'fruits of the spirit' are joy and peace. the cancer is the maneur and the 'fruits' are the crop!!! LOL Because these two attributes are firmly planted in my whole being I have the strength to continue my fight. We can focus on anything that we want.Joy is my attitude, a true gift from God.I CHOOSE to be joyful. Peace is what sustains me when I feel overwhelmed and instead of feeling defeated , I concentrate very hard on remaining peaceful when it would be so much easier to become angry and bitter. Of course we become discouraged at times, but looking for daily blessings (hey, that means all of you C@ :loveya ) keeps us going and we know that one day we will be restored to wholeness. Faith is not based on the evidence that we can see, but the promise of what is to come.

I know this seems waay to simplistic and downright corny to some, but it works for me. When it is time for my family and friends to gather together and remember me, I want them to celebrate my life, not mourn my passing because I will be celebrating at the best homecoming party ever :thumb

Hugs, Mariposa

After having gone through this "second hand" with my best friend Jan, I can appreciate how someone who is suffering so much can be so grateful. My good friend Sally just recovered from breast cancer, and my ex-boss and CFO and dear friend Laurie has Lupus and has battled numerous diseases and cancers, and they all three maintained an incredible joy of life and acceptance of what is, is. I have such respect for your cousin and for Mari, for all you shoulder and how you carry it.

May God bless you and all of us who have health issues.
