some questions for 1st time Alaska cruise

We're headed to Alaska in mid-august with our kids ages 10 and 14, and I have some questions. First, I'm looking for some recommendations on shore excursions that do not include helicopters and would be fun for our family. Also, I'm a little worried about our cabin placement. We're on the Caribe deck in the 300s and I have read here that it can be choppy that far front. Should I be concerned? I don't know if I can change it at this point. Also, we have 2 cabins assigned to our family, and I know that Princess requires 1 adult in each. How strictly do they police this? Thanks for your help.

As long as the rooms are close to each other, there shouldn't be any problem without an adult. They do not police it at all. We've had front and back cabins and it doesn't really seem to make that much difference, at least to us. I've heard people say front is better. We've never been seasick. Since you are one the Caribe deck I am assuming you are on the Diamond or Sapphire? We had a room in the 300's on the Sapphire. I think it was B319, just a floor above you . It was great, no problems.

In Skagway I did the river rafting (great trip) while my husband and son did a gold mine tour. The guides name was Ziggy and my family thought he was great. We will probably all do that one again on our trip to Alaska next year. Both were booked through Princess. Either trip would probably be a lot of fun for your family.

Thank you for the info. Our travel agent had made a really big deal about the kids in their own room -- stuff like we had to keep some of our clothes in their closet and we should sleep there the first nite. I didn't like the idea of spending my vacation sneaking around (LOL!).

We are also doing the 3-day Heart of Alaska tour. I've read on here that the mosquitos were bad. Is this really true?

We just returned from Alaska and our room was extreme bow and it wasn't bad at all. We had very calm water so that may have made the difference. We we able to hear the ice bergs hitting the ship while in Glacier Bay and College Fjord, but that was kind of neat. We also seen dolphins playing in the bow wake.

As far as the mosquitos...........Yes, they are big and hungry. We used 100% deet and they didn't seem to bite, but they still buzzed around our heads. They weren't bad in town and only were a bother when we went hiking.

It's been a few years since I was in Alaska, but I'm sure they have some excursions where you get on another boat and go looking for wildlife (WHALES) it is definitely worth the time and money.
Enjoy!

You will have no problems having the kids in their own room. As long as they behave, no one will care.

That's good to know that we don't have to worry about the kids alone in their room. They are well-behaved so that's not an issue.

Now, I am concerned about the mosquitos on our cruisetour afterwards. I don't do well with big critters biting me. And I hate to douse myself and my kids in Deet.

If you want a little exercise, but nothing horribly strenuous try the Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Adventure in Skagway. It's a little over 1 mile of hiking/walking with some elevation through the gorgeous forest terrain and then a beautiful (calm) float trip. We did it off the Coral Princess last August and it was great.
