Southern Caribbean advice needed!

Hello all,
I feel like I'm posting a lot lately, but my boyfriend and I have been starting to think more and more about booking a cruise again, and I could always use (and probably really need) input from those who have cruised so much more than myself.

This time I'm looking for people who have cruised out of San Juan. I am interested in a Southern Caribbean cruise that will be offered on Destiny, cruising out of San Juan. I have read many reviews, some good and some awful. of course there are people with bad experiences, but I'm just looking for as much feedback as possible. I never know what to believe in reviews or what - I'll look at something and think it's a great trip and cruise and ship, and then read horrible reviews and don't know what to think! Anyway, all that said, has anyone done a Southern Caribbean cruise out of San Juan? If so, what are your impressions? And what does anyone/everyone think of Destiny?

Also, one of the complaints in some of the negative reviews was that everyone spoke spanish and it was VERY difficult to find other english-speaking passengers. Is this true? And how much of an issue/problem did you find it to be? I don't speak spanish, and am just wondering if this would affect the trip for me?

Ok, just thought I'd check in and see if you call can offer advice. Thanks!
Jessica

Hello Hec,

We've sailed out of San Juan 4 or 5 times, and did not encounter many Spanish speaking passengers on our trips, so that was no issue at all for us.

Now, none of those cruises were with Carnival (they were Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Princess), so there's a possiblity that different cruise lines may market to the local people more than others. Perhaps some of our Cruise Addict's TA's will be able to offer info on that.

Also there's the possibilty that the particular cruise that you heard about, included a large group or two, of Spanish speaking passengers, which skewed the passenger ratio.

Would it affect your cruise if there were lots of spanish speakers on board? Well, maybe. If you end up sitting at a dinner table with people you cannot converse with, then yes, I'd say that would surely affect your cruise in an adverse way. I would hope that you'd be able to change tables in that situation.

We were on this cruise two years ago in April. The ship was fine. I don't think the layout is as good and some of the other Carnival ships but it wasn't too difficult to navigate. We were unimpressed with the staff. However, that was long enough ago that all the same staff would not be there. As unimpressed with the staff as we were we still loved this cruise because of the ports. We were thinking of going on it again this year...but the ship has been rented out during the time we wanted to go.

Because the ship leaves from San Juan, you will not be able to avoid people who speak Puertorican. However, we do not recall there being so many of them that it was a problem.

And if you enjoy breath-taking sites and amazing quiet...go on the Rainforest Aerial Tram on Dominica . My husband wants to do that again as soon as we can get back there! It was awesome. As much as we enjoyed our tour of the Emerald Pool and Trafalgar Falls we took the first time we were there we thought the Tram was exceptional.

Ooh thanks for the advice everyone! Those excursions sound fantastic! And we definitely don't have a problem with people speaking Spanish on the ship, it would be ridiculous to assume everyone spoke English if you're leaving from San Juan! But I was just making sure that it wasn't going to be EVERYONE and we'd have no one to meet and talk to during the trip (which is what was implied in one of the reviews I read)! Last time we really only got to know the people at our dinner table, and I would assume even if there was a large Spanish-speaking population that maybe they would try to sit us with some English-speaking tablemates.

Anyway thanks for the advice all!

My hubby and I were on Destiny for Halloween this past year and had a great time. The only time we had a problem was our very first night at dinner as it was open seating in the dining room. You were taken to the next available table with seating and we were seated at a table for 10. 7 of these were spanish speaking ladies and me and hubby with one open chair left. We kinda felt uncomfortable this night but the food was fabuloso and even though I did not speak spanish, all agreed with smiles and hand jestures that the food was great. The next night we had our assigned seats and were seated with other english speaking tablemates. Carnival just seems to know these things and handles them very well. I would love to do that same cruise again and again. Ship is huge and fun can be had almost anywhere on board. Most of the announcements were made in both english and spanish. If you get a chance to see some of Old San Juan do so, wonderful old fort walking distance from the dock.We saw it as we sailed out to sea all lit up.
Most, if not all, of the ships crew will speak both english and spanish so don't even worry about that stuff. You will have a great time, the ports are wonderful and warm. I hope you go and have the time of your life. If you do have any problems just contact a staff member, they will take care of you and see to it you are happy.

We just returned from the Destiny (March 25th sailing). Although the layout of the ship was not as good as some we have been on (It was our 7th Carnival Cruise), it was still nice. Our Cabin Steward was great and our dining room staff was on par with our expectations. The worst part of the cruise was the lack of decent evening entertainment (we don't gamble) and the fact that Deck 5 was a cloud of smoke in the evenings. The production shows were good though. Also, the pursers desk staff was among the worst we have ever experienced! As to your question about the Spanish speaking passengers/messages... many important messages were announced in both languages, but all the staff spoke English quite well. I don't think we heard passengers speaking Spanish any more than we have on any other cruise. On this cruise, we took 4 Carnival arranged shore excursions. This is unusual for us (we usually hire a taxi on our own) but they were all things we really wanted to do. I was very pleased with all of the tours we took. We did the following (Sail to St. John for snorkeling, Whale Watch in Dominicia (we saw 7 Sperm whales, Traveled on the Brig Unicorn for a pirate adventure, and did the Tiami Sail and snorkle with the sea turtles).

If you have any other specific questions for us, let me know.

I too have read so many bad reviews regarding the Destiny. We found nothing could be further from the truth on our cruise.

San Juan Airport; Smooth, smooth, smooth...

San Juan Terminal: We bought two bottles of Rum outside the terminal, with a six pack of coke, brought it in on our carry on bags.... Nothing was said.

Embarking: the easiest ever of my six cruises with Carnival.

Cleanliness: Ship was very clean, someone was always cleaning.

Decor: I thought the decor was wonderful...... deep rich rust color with blue..... throughout.

Food: Was excellent. Wait Staff: Our head waiter, Sebastian was fantastic!!

MaitreD: was awesome. He had just come in the week before and was so entertaining. He went out of his way when we mentioned that our favorite meal, Chateau Briand, was begin served on Good Friday. He had a special dinner waiting for us the nexy day. Very unexpected and we were quite pleased.

Steward: Knew our names, room was clean, every request was met.

Airconditioning: Cold, Cold, Cold...... despite the 90 degree weather. Room: Clean and bed comfortable as always.

Weather: was beautiful every day.... sunny, warm, but not too hot. Sun was very strong as I got a good sunburn despite sun tan oil.

Ocean: Smooth as glass.....only one day of slight waves.

Debarking: Went well except one of our suitcases lost its tag and we spent quite a while hunting for it.

San juan Airport: Was awful......... US Air never fails to deliver bad service. We were in line for over two hours waiting to check in. People were being pulled from the lines to make their flights which was good but caused some hard feelings for people who had been standing in line for a long long time..only to have passengers arrive a half hour before their flight took off, they were taken straight to the window. Which I fully understand.........but there wasn't just one or two their were at least fifty or more..... We finally got through...... security was a breeze. Our plane took off..... about a half hour late......I slept most of the trip so the ride was quick.

PORTS OF CALL: This was a very port intensive cruise. We were hesitant as we were concerned we would be exhausted by the end of the week. We made sure we booked the every excursion in the morning...it was cooler...but also we then had lunch, then laid out each day in the afternoon, before getting ready for dinner. It was very very relaxing.

San Juan: We have been to San Juan before..... We decided to see the Barcardy Rum Factory: Be aware on Sundays........ the factory shuts down at 4:00 p.m. We were taken in a taxi with about 8 other people. When we arrived the guard at the gate did not want to let us in. A big bouncer type guard came in over and said something in Spanish to the driver.... in a not so nice tone. To us he said we were welcome to come in and sample the rum, but not the factory as they were closed. He invited us to come back the next day. It was clear by the shady behavior of the taxi driver he had known all along that the factory would be closed. When we got out he kept pushing for his 3.00 fee per person. I voiced my concern that if went in would he wait? He said he wouldn't wait but pointed to two taxis and said they will be here. I didn't trust this joker one bit. I told him if a taxi wasn't available I would be coming after his butt. He looked a little startled and said something smart which I didn't quite catch. But I got the drift.

St Thomas: was beautiful as always, especially from Paradise Point. We stopped at a mountain top for a wonderview of Magen's Bay. If we are fortunate to go again that will be one of our stops for sure. It was a beautiful beach! We stopped at St. Peter’s Great House which was quite beautiful.

Dominica: Pronouned as Dom-in--eeka..... All these years I have been pronouncing it incorrectly! This was one of the most lush islands of them all. It was absolutely wonderful. We took the Rainforest Arial Tram which was quite breathtaking. Immense trees, and mammoth leaves....... I kept looking for King Kong to appear at any moment. It ws not what I had expected.. It was peaceful and soothing..... when we arrived at the top we got off to go on a short hike.... which our guide was most informative. Then we got back on for the ride back. It was pretty hot and sunny that day.....but in the rainforest, with a constant shower of rain, it was shady and a good twenty degrees cooler. I enjoyed this excursion the best.

Barbados: I was disappointed in this island. I expected more.... The only highlight for me was Bathsheba which had a spectacular beach with huge rocks and crashing waves. It was very beautiful.

St. Lucia: Was very quaint and very pretty. They have alot of schools for children in St. Lucia and it is clear they hold education dear as alot of their resources are dedicated to providing quality schools. This island was so very beautiful.... The only disappointment I had was not seeing the Pitons up close...next time.... I hope to. St. Lucia looks to be more like a pacific island..... Different then the rest. We stopped at a private home called Stony hill..... with a magnificient view. Here we sampled Banana Ketchup and Banana hot sauce...which I thought I would hate but.... was so tasty we bought a couple bottles.

Antigua: We took the 4x4 tour. We saw alot of the island and some of the most beautiful beaches. I took a nice swim in the ocean and loved every minute of it!

One day at sea: Very very relaxing..... after a port intensive cruise. This was the best cruise I have ever taken.... and I would go back on Destiny in a heartbeat.

Cruise director: Was okay.. a little irritating. There was not much for him to do as pretty much all the activities took place at night as everyone was in the ports most of the day.

Note for those interested: Cruise Director said they have found that most of their passengers like the port intensive cruises and they will be changing Destiny every year to include different islands. He said next year the Destiny will include St. Kitts, St. Martin..and an overnight stay on a island.... santa domingo??? We didn't catch the name......but the overnight stay will be at a private resort. He said they would be adding Aruba on in the future......my guess if the cost of fuel drops.

I hope this helps because I was worried as well regarding the bad reviews. I can not stress enough how wonderful this cruise was, the staff, the ship, the MatreD, and the itinerary.

The only thing I didn't care for was the Cruise Director, not that he was bad but that we have had two really good directors before him and he paled in comparisons.

Glad to hear the Destiny is a wonderful ship!
My wife and I are preparing to sail her on 5-6-07.
We have one problem though.
On Carnival's web site it shows that you can book excursions 180 days prior to sailing. We have a booking number, I have completed our FunPass, but when we review the excusions, there is no icon or entry to actually book an excusion. We booked our cruise thru CruiseDeals and they contacted Carnival and said we would have to book excursions after boarding. The is the opposite of what their web site shows. I did read some past reviews from people who tried to book scuba excursions after boarding and they were all sold out. The people (staff) on the ship told them they should have booked their excursions before they boarded.
It appears we may be stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Carnival did respond to my dilema with a phone number to call. My wife is planning to call tomorrow.
Has anyone else encountered a problem like this?
I find it hard to believe that all of the excursions are sold out four weeks before sailing.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Maybe, "I'll see you at the deck party"!
