This April my husband and I are going to HI and we booked a cat 12. We have never had a suite on a cruise before --anyone have any ideas on what we are to expect. We usually book a cat 8a/b so we are looking forward to seeing what it will be like.

We have been in a Cat 12 on the Legend (sister ship). Very nice cabin. We booked it in order to have a lot of room for our kids. However, I think you should be aware, that booking a top of the line cabin on Carnival is not the same as top of the line on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, etc. There are no pianos, no concierge service, and no dining room table for 8. This is not to suggest that you need them---I could not afford these on RCCL. But, you need to know that a big suite on Carnival is a bigger room with a few extra amenities. We loved out Cat 12 and hope you do as well.

Thank you both for the information. As I looked at the pics your right serene56 cat 11 looks like the better deal with the balcony etc. I believe the ship is filled but I am going to contact my TA to see if we can switch our cabin. I am a firm believer that you should get your money worth for whatever you get. Would either of you know whether or not they pick cat 11 or 12 to dine with the captain one of the nites.

Im gonna say-- no- it doesnt matter what cat you booked. I have read reviews where people on their first cruise booked into a inside cabin got this perk. I have never seen a captain eat in the dining room on Carnival...(I did see him eat at the supper club on the Miracle)

My family of 5, including a 2 year old in the past-has never been to the captain's table.

One other benefit to booking a cat 12 is the Skipper's Club. We were able to skip all of the lines at check in and walk right on the ship. Didn't even have to have our picture taken.

We stayed in a Cat. 12 on the Spirit (16 day Panama Canal cruise) and Cat.11 on the Pride. I would stay in the Cat. 12 anyday..especially on a long cruise (12 day Hawaii). You have a much larger balcony and a much larger room. The bathroom is huge. It has a toilet and a bidet. It also has a large oval jacuzzi tub. There is a tremendous difference between the 11 and the 12. I believe you do get what you pay for. We will be in a Cat. 12 on our next cruise. Once you sail in it, it is hard to go back. Have a wonderful cruise.

binky-- were you in a reg cat 11 on the Pride or the wrap around? I would like to hear a comparison on a reg 12 and a wrap around 11 on the spirit class ship.

Serene -

The cat 12 cabins are all midship. I believe the cat 12 balconies are 115 sq ft. The wrap around balconies are 220 sq. ft. A normal cat 11 balcony is 80 sq ft (twice the size of a normal balcony). An extended balcony is 60 sq ft and I forget the size of a cat 9 balcony (all the cat 9 cabins are on the starboard side of the ship - I have no idea why).

Serene56,
We stayed in a Cat. 11 on the Pride last November to Mexico. Having sailed the three previous cruises in a Cat. 12, I can say it really seemed to be a big difference to me. The balcony for a Cat. 12 is about 1/3 again as long as the mid ship Cat. 11's. We love our balcony, but we also loved the additional inside space that you get with the Cat. 12. The wrap around balcony would be great, except I don't like being at the very back of the ship. Mid ship seems to be a much smoother ride. I also believe there is more privacy in the mid ship balconies, rather that in the rear Cat. 11's. I guess it is all in what your particular wants are. On our Cat 12 balcony, we had two chairs, two loungers and a table. On our Cat. 11 we had room for two loungers and a table. Even that seemed a little crowded. If you have any other questions...let me know.

I was in a cat 11 wrap around balcony suite on the Pride in May 2004. We also took advantage of the Skipper Club. However, the picture is for security purposes and is required. You can skip the embarkation photo, but you can do that even if you are in a cat 1 cabin. The security photo is required of all passengers, regardless of age or cabin category.

We heard about the Skipper Club and my TA asked for info on this. SHe was told b/c it is in Ensenada Mx this isnt a easier embarkation process. So we arent able to do that one. We will be flying in a day earlier in San Diego and we will not be doing a post. Looking forward to this trip.

Trust me when I tell you, you will not be jealous. They will have a larger balocony but you will have the larger cabin, and better ride. Take care and have fun.

The Skipper Club is offered in Long Beach. That is where I boarded when I was in the Skipper Club. The following is from the Carnival web site ...

The Skippers Club program is an exclusive service designed to afford guests in deluxe suite accommodations with special registration and boarding privileges. This service is now available in:

* Miami
* Port Canaveral
* New Orleans
* Galveston
* Tampa
* Long Beach
* Fort Lauderdale
* San Juan
* New York
* Jacksonville
* Mobile

If you are entitled to Skippers Club services, please inquire at embarkation.

The procedure for Long Beach (as of May 2004) is to go to the door going into the dome. Find someone from Carnival who is helping with the people trying to board the ship. Tell her/him you are in the Skipper Club. (S)he will ask to see your boarding ticket (which should say Skipper Club on it). (S)he will then take you to a small room inside and near the door where someone will check you in, give you your room key and walk you to the front of the security line. You go through secruity, past everyone waiting to register and get their room key and go to the place where the welcome aboard picture is taken. Then you go up stairs where the security picture is taken. Then you board the ship. I figure it save us about 45 to 60 minutes of waiting in line.
