Wife and I are taking my son and his friend on this cruise for a graduation gift. I know the AK cruises are not the fun in the sun cruises of the Caribbean. Will it still be entertaining for the teens? Are there usually a sufficient number of kids in their age group as to provide activities and etc...?

How many kids on board will depend on when schools let out. In our neck of the woods school is still in sessing at the end of May. My guess is there won't be as many kids as on a cruise that sails later.

You/they will find however that the ships have great programs for the kids of all ages. They have clubs for the teens as well as the younger kids and they will be isolated from each other.

You don't mention the ship. Does it have a covered pool? If so then plenty of swimming. If not they could be hampered by rain. However that hasn't seemed to deter kids on the cruises we've taken in Alaska. There will also be a video arcade, basketball court, ping pong, and shuffleboard for the kids.

If the kids like nature at all there of course is an abundance of that.

I'm sure they and you as well will have a terriffic time. Alaska's awsome.

Regarding the ship itself, I was on it in October and it had just gotten out of drydock for improvements in San Francisco. They put together a quickie 5-night cruise and I took my 9 year old girl and 13 year old boy. The Spirit is beautiful and the upgrades that they made or were in the process of making should make it really nice. The Trivoli Pool is not covered, but they do heat it. And they have a very large video arcade with many of the latest games and to my surprise and pleasure, 3/4 of them were free and ready to play. There is also a small disco on the very top deck that is mainly frequented by the teenagers and they also have teen programs with activities. I hardly saw my son the entire time we were on the ship, and he has said that it was the best vacation ever!

My only complaints with the ship were that the beds were very hard (ask for an extra egg-crate foam) and the food was fairly average compared to the other cruise we have taken. But the Spirit is gorgeous and we had a wonderful time.
