The last time I was at St. Maartin, which is my favorite, we tendored in from our ship.
Is it still the way to get to shore or is there now a dock for the ships? If you do now dock how long of a walk to the downtown area?

There is a dock that will accommodate 4 ships. Nice duty free shopping area, bars, etc, there. I would estimate it is about 1 1/2 miles into downtown. Options are to take a taxi, water taxi, or walk. If you would like to view the dock as we approached St. Maarten, check out my photo gallery entitled "Zuiderdam, May 2003" posted on this web site.

I thinkthey now have one of the nicer cruise pier areas in the Caribbean. The plan there is to have a connected shopping area from the new pier right into the old area in the center of town.

Beats some of the other islands where you get off the ship in the middle of a cargo facility.

In Jan. /03 we were in St. Maarten, also our favourite port, and we were not tendered. It is not a long walk into town. Maybe 10 - 15 minutes walk or 5 min. taxi ride.
