We stopped at an electronics store in St. Thomas which was right by the ship dock (the mall right there at the dock). We weren't all that impressed with the prices. My husband believed (and it turned out he was correct) that if you watch your local sale prices, you can get as good a deal as in the islands. And, my husband who is one who can worry about something dire happening for anything - worried about follow up care if we were to buy in St. Thomas and not at our local electronics store. For him, saving $50 isn't worth the potential headache. JMHO

Boolchand's on the main street in St. Martin is the store for electronics and camera's. As mentioned though, shop at home first and know what you want and what it costs. I once bought a Bose radio there when we did a land tour. I had to pack it and carry it home safely. The price was right, but I found I could have bought it for exactly the same cost back home as the factory was 30 miles from our house!

I purchased a mini dv movie camera several years ago at Royal Caribbean in St. Thomas and love it. It cost about $100 less than the best deal I found in the states. Good luck

A couple things to be aware of when purchasing electronics in the islands:

Be SURE what you purchase has a US warranty. Ask to see the warranty card in the box you're purchasing. Many only have international warranties which can be a real pain.

Second, do price online before you go. www.Pricegrabber.com is a good place to look. Often, what you'll find in the islands will be about the same price, but you'll get more accessories with it (memory cards, camera bags, etc.)

Shop smart and good luck!

Great advice BurBunny!! I got the best deal for my digital camera at Boolchand's in St. Maarten. I priced them before leaving home so I knew what to base the price on. Last Christmas I purchased a Sony Discman for my daughter there and just for the heck of it, I priced it in St. Thomas the next day while in port and it was more expensive in St. Thomas..a lot more.

Some things are cheaper in the islands..some are not. I was interested in purchasing the power adapter for my camera last year in St. Maarten, but it was $20.00 cheaper at home even with paying state tax on it. Just keep an eye on your sale papers or check prices online.

Boolchand's has a website..

I purchased a Tag Heuler watch over two years ago and had every intention to buy it when we were in St Thomas. I went to every store in the shopping area of St Thomas and I finally purchased at home for three hundred dollars less then anyone in St Thomas was offering to sell it. Yes it was a Grey market purchase on the internet . It is now two and a half years old and I have never had a problem.
