Sailing on RCCL Explorer in May and can't decide to book the St John excursion. Has anyone ferried and used a taxi to Trunk Bay on their own versus booking the excursion package. We have our own snorkel equipment. If so, what was the cost of the ferry and taxi? Thanks!

We went on our own to have more time on St John. Took a cab to Red Hook (about $6-7 per person), then the ferry (I think it was $6 pp) and then another cab to Trunk Bay. The snorkling trail was disappointing, lots of people, few fish. We didn't get there till after 1, and Trunk Bay got very crowded. There have been a lot of posts saying that other beaches on St. John are equally beautiful and a lot less crowded. In hindsight I wish I had listened. If I ever am lucky enough to go back to St. John, I would tour the whole island and check out other beaches. Our cabdriver was supposed to stop for scenic shots, but he never did.

Also, there is a $4/person entry fee to Trunk Bay. The last time we were there we spent a couple of hours at Trunk Bay and then caught a cab to Cinnamon Bay for a few more hours. The trail at Trunk is neat to see once but I have been there twice now and I don't think I will go back. It was not crowded the day that we were there but Cinnamon was practically deserted. We felt like we had our own private paradise. Definitely, head to St. John on your own. The tours do not spend much time there at all. I have pictures of both beaches at http://community.webshots.com/user/jean_lynd if you want to see how crowded they were when we were there. I hope this helps!

Go to St John! Absolutely beautiful. We did the trip on our own. Above prices are correct, but go to Cinnamon Bay. We have been to many beaches and it is our favorite so far.

We were in St. Thomas end of March on a cruise. The day we were in port was with 4 other ships at dock - just a bit crowded. We booked a daysail through Sailing High Pockets to beat the crowds. My husband is a diver and I was a first time snorkeler, very nervous. It was a full day starting with wonderful fruit, juices and open bar. They fit the day to what you want to do and where you want to sail within the day. Kathleen is so wonderful at making you feel comfortable and relaxed. While we snorkeled(and there were so many beautiful fish and sealife), Kathleen fixed a fresh, gourmet lunch for us on board. Then we went snorkeling again and it was so amazing. Once we were back at Red Hook, Kathleen called and had a taxi ready and waiting to take us back to the cruise ship. It was the best excursion of our whole cruise. The other couple that was on the same daysail with us had been to the Caribbean several times and commented that is was truly the best snorkeling they had experienced. Here is the link for more information www.sailhighpockets.com.
I hope you have a wonderful trip!
