We were thinking of renting a jeep on St. Thomas and touring both islands. We think it would be nice to be on our own time and could just stop to snorkel/picnic where ever we wanted. Keeping an eye on the time of course. Would we be able to get off the ship at a early hour to be able to make the most of our day?

Any advice would be appreciated

I've never rented a car in St. Thomas, but understand there are places to do this near the Havensight dock, and there is a car ferry that could get you over to St. John for around $35 round trip. Here is a link to a site with the ferry schedules: http://vinow.com/general_usvi/interisland_ferry/#St. John Car Barge: Red Hook to Cruz Bay

One reason we haven't rented in St. Thomas is that the traffic is very heavy and hectic in places, especially if you have to drive through the downtown area, or out to Red Hook, where the car ferries leave. We've rented jeeps in St. John on a number of occassions, and love driving around the island on our own. There are several places to rent from just off the ferry dock in Cruz Bay, and there is very little traffic on the island, especially once you get out of Cruz Bay. Its a beautiful drive, with many overlooks, and there are a number of stunning beaches you can visit just off the road. I'm sure you'll get other opinions, but I would recommend taking the passenger ferry over to St. John and renting there if you want to drive around on your own. Have fun!

Hey Thanks!

Sounds like a better idea to rent in St. John. I'm not sure I really want to see that much of St. Thomas on this trip

Did you have to make reservations?

I agree with renting on St. John only. St. Thomas wasn't really all that nice in my opinion, and driving was pretty crazy.

You probably won't need reservations in August. We were just there in January, which is the high season, for the second year in a row, and were able to find jeeps just for the day without a reservation. If you needed one for more than a day, it would be a good idea to reserve in advance. And if you can't fine a jeep, do something that's even more fun: rent a dinghy and explore the beaches and cays by water. They're available just to the right of the ferry dock. You'll have a blast whichever you choose. I'm jealous of you! You're going to have a great time!
