I've never rented a car in St. Thomas, but understand there are places to do this near the Havensight dock, and there is a car ferry that could get you over to St. John for around $35 round trip. Here is a link to a site with the ferry schedules: http://vinow.com/general_usvi/interisland_ferry/#St. John Car Barge: Red Hook to Cruz BayOne reason we haven't rented in St. Thomas is that the traffic is very heavy and hectic in places, especially if you have to drive through the downtown area, or out to Red Hook, where the car ferries leave. We've rented jeeps in St. John on a number of occassions, and love driving around the island on our own. There are several places to rent from just off the ferry dock in Cruz Bay, and there is very little traffic on the island, especially once you get out of Cruz Bay. Its a beautiful drive, with many overlooks, and there are a number of stunning beaches you can visit just off the road. I'm sure you'll get other opinions, but I would recommend taking the passenger ferry over to St. John and renting there if you want to drive around on your own. Have fun!
