We are going on the Carnival Glory in Oct and the only port we haven't figured out is St Thomas. I have read reviews on Sapphire beach, Coki beach, Honeymoon beach, Magen's Bay and the beaches in St John. Has anyone been to a few of these and can compare them? We want to go snorkelling on our own and can't figure out the best beach to go to.
Thanks!

On St. Thomas itself, Coki Beach (or the beach next door at the Renaissance) definitely has the best snorkeling. On St. John, Trunk Bay definitely has the reputation, and it is good snorkeling, but it can get crowded. It is a fabulously beautiful beach. Honeymoon Beach or Cinnamon Beach are my favorites on St. John because they're a bit less crowded but the snorkeling is just as good.

Burbunny,
Thanks for the info! How do you get to Honeymoon beach, unless I'm mistaken, I read somewhere about having to hike to that beach. We don"t mind but want to know in advance!

We loved Magen's Bay, just took a cab from the pier and there were lots of cabs there at the beach when we were done. The walk-in snorkelling is good there, the beach is world-famous for its' beauty, and deservedly so! You ought to see it just for the color of the water!

Bob & Carole... You do have to hike (or boat) to get to Honeymoon Beach on St. John, as there are no roads leading to it. The easiest way to get there is to get off the ferry in Cruz Bay, turn left and walk over to the National Park Office and ask for directions and a map. They'll point out the start of the trail (which is just across the street), and its about a 20-30 minute relatively easy, scenic hike from there. The same trail leads to Solomon Beach, then to Honeymoon, then on to Caneel, and there are marked trails leading off from the main trail to each beach. I've not spent any time on Caneel (YET!), but absolutely loved the other two. Beautiful, quiet beaches, soft white sand, calm clear water, plenty of shade, and with very good snorkeling on the rocks separating the two. There are no facilities of any kind on either Solomon or Honeymoon, so pick up some water in town before beginning the hike, and take your own snorkel gear. After spending time on Honeymoon, you can either hike back to the ferry dock, or head the other way to Caneel, eat lunch, use the facilities there, and then catch a taxi back to town.

We used to go to Caneel all of the time, it was a lower end beach back then, now I am not sure. By memory I would suggest Coki, Megans, Trunk on St. John and anywhere around Water Island. The sunset tiki boat is fun if your into a party.

Coki Beach would be the most convenient as you can snorkel right from the beach.
There is no hiking involved at all. Additionally, you can rent snorkel equipment,
purchase disposable underwater cameras, snacks, drinks. You can relax on the
beach and as an added bonus Coral World is right next door. Were you aware
of Coral World? To learn about this marine park, just go to www.coralworld.com
Taxis are plentiful in the area as well.

Have fun planning!

Yeah forgot about coral world which was built a couple years before I left there, its pretty cool. When I was a kid I saw an Octopuss right off the beach in about 6 foot of water and it was something I will never forget it had to have had 20 colors to it, one of the most beautiful creatures I have seen in all my yearsw of diving, And he was friendly to boot. Megans we used to get towed around in the water by the sea turtles but i do not think you are allowed to touch them now.
