Is anybody else signed up for this cruise? We just returned from 14 days aboard the Star downunder. It was a glorious trip on a beautiful ship, and we look forward to being on her again in the fall to the Greek Isles. We look forward even more to finding Cruise-Addicts who will also be aboard, and planning independent shore excursions for the islands.

Going April 10. Will write a review. Never do independent excursion so I'm sorry I won't be able to help you there.

This itinerary is really port intensive. We'll be touring all but one day.

Pat,
We are hoping to go on the April 10 Greek Isle cruise. It will be our first cruise. Would you share any tips you have on, booking with online travel agents(ie: vacations to go), airline tickets at time of cruise purchase as oppose to independent booking, day tours, and any other general info or tips. Yes, this trip does seem very port intensive, any tips?? Thanks......Dianne

Dianne H,

I'll give your questions a try: On-line travel agent? If you're a frist time cruiser on-line travel agents aren't generally recommended because you have questions, like about the airline tickets. If you feel confident you've understood about travel insurance, the different cabins, dining choices, etc., you can give it a try (costly, but survivable--maybe a cabin poortly positioned, maybe not your preferable seating, etc.).

Airline tickets at time of cruise purchase? I think this kind of flight is called open-jaw, where you're coming in at one airport and leaving from another. Usually these are quite costly on your own. Princess will probably have a charter flight into Venice. So if you can't do it cheaper and timely, you buy the flight with the cruise purchase.

That said, if you could make it into Venice on April 10 (you'd be sure to make the cruise because it stays overnight in Venice anyway) and take a train from Rome to Venice at the end of the cruise, that may be a less expensive alternative.

The intensive itinerary? Get a go-go attitude if you want to do it all. Watch the times and length of the tours you're booking. I remember the Athens tours have a side trip to the Temple of Poseidon, that's a 1 1/2 hour coach ride one way in addition to the tour of the city. Look at the day before and the day after schedule. (Coincidentally, in this particular example, the Captain will probably announce when he is passing the Temple because they traditionally throw a tribute--I think a glass of wine.)

The tour I think is the most desirable for a first time visitor is the trip along the Amalfi coast when we go to Naples.

So much for my try. If you have other questions, just ask.

Thanks Pat for the speedy response. Vacations To Go Cruise + air is $1600 cheaper than with Princess. The travel agency I visited knew less than we do it seemed. Booking own airfare really seems to be about the same. I thought it would be more convenient to book with the cruise for transfers to and from ship. Not sure how concerned we are about the room on this cruise as it seems we wont be in it much. We are going for an outside room at this point.
This is going to be a last minute ordeal for us. My husband found this trip for our honeymoon and my 50th birthday. So we just started the process last week. Like I said this will be our first cruise, so have no clue of that means of travel. We are pretty versatile so should be able to cope with most situations. Guess we will just jump in with both feet and go with the flow. Learn as we go.

I'll keep you posted on our progress and may be we can buy you a drink for your advise.
Thanks again.

We hope you and your husband are enjoying your honeymoon cruise, DianeH. Please give us a full report on your return.

Are there any other CruiseAddicts aboard the Sept 25 Greek Isles cruise? Or the following transAtlantic crossing from Venice to FLL?

The Rome-Venice leg is sold out. So far we've found about 60 fellow cruisers on three websites, but would love to talk to more. Better to plan independent shore excursions, etc.

Hi Mike and Charlotte, My mother, sister, and I are on the Star Princess leaving Rome on 9/25. We are in the process of arranging all our excursions. Have info from both Marcello and Sorrentolimo in Naples and Nincedogan in Kusadasi. Thinking we would like to share expenses at either. Most have room for 6-8 and we are only 3. Also, we decided to rent a car in Corfu. Thought about tours in Santorini, but heard it can be fun to just take the local bus and "wander!" Will check that out some more. Also, just made arrangements to get to ship from Holiday Inn by airport in Rome. We are starting in Istanbul as my mother really wanted to see it since I was there a few years ago. Since the mideast crisis, we haven't been able to find a tour that included it, so we are doing it on our own. Lucky you, on the extended tour back to Fla.! Sue
