Staying at the Queen Mary

I have seen in a few posts that people have stayed on the Queen Mary before checking on in Long Beach. I am going on my first cruise in October and we will be leaving out of Long Beach. I was wondering if any one had any suggestions/experience with staying at the Queen Mary the night before the cruise leaves.
1. Does it make it easier to check in with Carnival the next morning. I am guessing just not having to fight all the cars coming and going would make it a little easier
2. Do you get to check in earlier since you are there. (I do understand that this does not get you on the ship eariler)
I would like to get up, check in and then go back to the Queen Mary for breakfast
3. Any suggestions on rooms on the Queen Mary ( I understand some are not that great)

Again ANY suggestions would be great. I am new to this whole thing - but VERY excited. Staying at the Queen Mary (and the cruise) will be a birthday present to myself.

I think the Queen Mary is a great idea for a pre cruise hotel stay. Carnival guests get a discount for the tours. Carnival has a desk in the lobby of the Queen Mary where you check in for your cruise. You leave your bags there and they will be delivered to your ship.

We stayed in the Queen Mary Hotel a few years ago, although not in conjunction with a Carnival cruise. I'd suggest going with the highest level of accommodation your budget will allow. There were three of us, so we opted for a suite with a second bedroom. I also saw a deluxe stateroom, and it seemed nice. Avoid the interior staterooms, if you can (no light), and note that the standard staterooms have a full-size, not king-size, bed.

I highly suggest taking a tour, either guided or on your own. The World War II tour was fascinating, and I am not a war history buff. Keep in mind that the Mary has gone through many changes, some very drastic, since becoming a hotel. I had the best fun, though, exploring places off the beaten path. There is enough signage to let you know what you are seeing.
