Sure could use some prayers for me

I am going in the hospital today for knee replacemnt surgery and I could sure use some prayers to calm my nerves down! Although I am kind of scared about the surgery going well, I am more concerned about the pain meds they will be giving me. I am always so sick after any operation because I just can't handle the strong pain meds given to me. I honestly have tried most of them and so far none have been right for me. I get so extremely sick from the pain meds that for days I am throwing up, keeping nothing down me. I do have to say that my husband mentioned Tylenol 3 with codeine to the doctor and he gave me a prescription to try it. I did try one pill and I have to say it did not make me seriously sick. Now I am hoping it is strong enough to take the pain away . I also heard that thearapy can be a bear, but I know in the long run it will be worth it. Hopefully I will be back home by Saturday, if all goes well.

Hoping for the best for you. Do they suggest ice packs or heat pads?
TLC works wonders too!

HUGE hugs, Prayers, heal up thoughts from here too.. and the meds can be titrated so they hold you , but not be so strong to send you the heaves.. Make sure you eat , and I cannot stress enough as we rehab joints at our place ALL the time.. work with and through the pain with your therapist.. and they know the stuff..it's true joint replace is a bear..and the first days are the worst..:(.. just tough it out Kathy and keep us updated.. I truly make it that I never want to replace my knees or hips.. and do EVERYTHING possible to ward it off. so far so good...Take care..=hugs Joanne

Prayers and good wishes, Cricket. As you know, I've had both knees replaced.

Advice: I, too, was scared of - and reluctant to take - pain meds. DON'T BE AFRAID. They will pound into your head, as they did me, to KEEP AHEAD OF THE PAIN. Very sound advice. You need to do that for your recuperation...and you'll find the need will gradually lessen. But not for awhile. Do your physical therapy...and take your pain meds before each session so they're working WHILE you do the PT.

They will ice down the knee (they never used heat on me, only ice) and you'll wear "TEDS" (compression hose).

I'll be away until mid-November. Once you're feeling up to posting, please feel free to PM me if you wish. There was an angel on the Board who, via PM, helped me through my surgeries - he had had the same procedures.

God bless...

Dear Kathy, I will be keeping you in my prayers for the next few days.

I know several people who have gone through this surgery, my sister for one.

You have received some good advice from the other posters here, and I too agree that you must eat when you take those pain meds. Also, if you tell the doctors that you get sick from the meds, they can possibly change the RX or give you some anti-nausea drugs. Just let them know...

You are a strong gal, and I'm sure you'll get through this and the therapy. Be positive!

I'm sure Mary Ann can share more if she sees this post, too.

Best wishes, and God bless...

you're in my prayers and thoughts, Cricket

-- I'm with Shipmaven, and have heard the same advice -- try to stay AHEAD of the pain.

I can relate to post-op nausea, etc... , it's still fresh in my mind although mine was over a year ago. Can they use local anesthia? I found it personally easier to recover from that than general.

Hucc - to the best of my knowledge, they can't use only local anesthesia for this procedure. Mine was in two steps - and I don't know if it was simply my surgeon (who's a stickler for caution). First a spinal epidural to numb the leg(s) and then general anesthesia.

I don't know much about the knee replacement surgery, just what my PT DIL tells me, rehab is the key. The more regular you are with you exercizes the better it goes. That is why I don't think I will be able to have it, because of my spinal cord damage, I don'w know if I can do the exercizes. They tell me I am a bad risk, anyway.

A few years ago I had my radial head removed in my left arm. Talk about scared, that is part of your elbow! But, the anesthesioligist did a nerve block in my arm right before surgery, and I had only a tiny bit of pain afterwards. It was amazing. I would do that again if I needed to. I don't know if they do that for knees, but it would be worth asking, it really worked.

Hope it all goes well, post when you can, hugs,cc
