So at long last dear BF has finally said yes to a cruise after 5 days of rain on our landcruise to mexico :) hehehehe.. as i explained had we been on a cruise we wouldnt have had NOTHING to do in 5 days of rain,, so yipppee for me.. hes never been on one, so i decided lets do the oasis.. after seeing the prices for next december i almost threw up... ive never paid more than 750 for a balcony.. when i got the price of 2500.00 i almost fell down.. then i did cruisecompete for a 7c cove balcony on the dream for the same week and same itinerary and got a price of 1402.00 WOW!!!! what a difference.. thats 1100.00 worth of frozen thingees!!!! also since my cruise buddy sonia is also bringing her first time cruiser hubby with her, our thought was that should the boys NOT LIKE cruising ( hard to imagine i know!!) that spending almost 4000 would really suck... SOOOO since i dont care what ship im on as long as i am cruising we figured.. lets go with the DREAM and if they love it, hopefully in 2011 after the Allure sets sail the prices will go down on the oasis... ANY dream cruisers here yet?? does anyone have their cruise capers scanned in yet?? I am soo excited, i just want to soak in everything!!!!

If you take me serious, it's your problem
Yeah, after seeing the rates for the oasis, allure, and dream... i think i'll be sailing on the dream first... RCI certainly thinks highly of themselves to be charging 1200.00 for an interior cabin that is no larger than one on carnival's legend, or pretty much any of carnivals fleet interior cabins.

I understand this is a new ship, and i understand that the service is usually a little better on RCI, but not worth almost double the cruising price. I mean Carnival's dream , rates are still about 2/3's to 1/2 as much as RCI's Oasis, and Allure. It's almost enough to make me not want to sail RCI with those rates. It's not just with the new ships either. Carnival's cabin rates are consistently lower than RCI's. Was comparing rates for a balcony cabin for next fall.. same itinerary, same size of ships(or as close as possible), and carnival rates were on average 30-40% less than RCI.

So a question i have is this; If carnival is selling cabins for so much less than RCI, what, if anything, is carnival cutting corners on?? I mean i wouldn't wonder this if it were a 10-20% difference in prices, but these are differences of 30-40% difference in prices. So is RCI "gouging" for lack of a better word for it, it's customers? and taking the huge profits to reinvest in more huge ships?? or is it like i fear and that carnival is cutting corners somewhere in the cruise experience.....

Hi, RCI has been charging allot more for along time while from my experience Carnival has been delivering more for the money. I call Carnival the best bang for the buck line.

Granted I love RCI ships and decor, etc. However, Think dollar for dollar Carnival is wonderful.

I also agree, choose older ships when looking to save money.. and ofcourse off season if you can. This ensures the lowest price.

I would stick with the Dream as it has so many enhancements and still is a NEW Ship.

LOL... ok got an even lower price for the Liberty 1229.00 for an 8a... now what !!!! agghhhh.. any liberty cruisers as of recent?

I went on the Liberty 12/2008 and LOVED it! It has the same layout as some of the Princess ships. Lots of things do do. I'd go again in a heartbeat.

After spending New year On the Carnival , I would no longer recommend Carnival to anyone, As well as paying double the price to what Carnival,RCI Or Princess have charged in previous years the list of penny saving cutbacks they have implemented is ridiculous and had everybody complaining.
In the specialty steak restaurant they have a restaurant Manager and staff who have never opened Champagne and are scared to do so and we had to wait 15 minutes for them to get someone qualified(????) to open it this was not once but twice, The First time we ate their my Medium Steak came up cold and dry inside, they claimed it was problem with griddle so they had to cook a Medium steak at same temp as a well done. The steak was replaced and the replacement was excellent but this kind of situation should not arise, and service overall on both occasions was slow and amateurish.
We had VIP Check in but as we were escorted past normal check in and the queues were horrific.
Other cut backs include Buffet choices at breakfast just awful and both sides were serving near on cold food. In contrast service was still good in the main dining room.
Yes I have been told that the Oasis is a bit OTT both in price and features but 2 months earlier we had a fantastic cruise on RCI's Liberty of the Sea, Service, Quality of food and choice was so many times better then what Carnival now has become, that in answer to this question I would say take a 2 year old RCI ship as opposed to a new Carnival.
The Liberty even at the age of 2 is far better than Carnivals flag ship and the Overall difference in service and standards makes Me an Ex Carnival VIP. In times of recession Carnivals answer to double fares and half service and menu is winning nobody.

JimboA, I agree with you on the service issues, as it is no secret that RCI gives excellent service. However, most of the posts i've read give Carnival an edge on the dining experience. Unfortunately, i'm sure you are correct to a degree about the expediency of check in at embarkation. Overall though, i think i'm going ot have to agree with John on this one...

Carnival delivers more bang for your buck!!!

I simply cannot believe that by paying, in most cases, a 40% premium in fares on RCI for the same cruise experience you get with Carnival. The only major difference i see between Carnival and RCI is that RCI delivers better service, and the ship deor is less "vegas" like and more refined. To me that is just not enough of a difference to spend up to 40% more on my cruise experience.
