Taking the cure!!

Well, it was a hard pill to swallow and took almost two years to get it down, but I've finally been "cured". I watched video of "Oasis of the Seas", read many articles like the attached, and having had my own experiences and well as those of friends and family...it's official. I'M DONE with cruising. The things I loved are history now. The new "wave" (pun intended) of XXXX (can't say politically incorrect things here) who are cruising can have it. I am certain the sophisticated traveler will no longer cruise mainsteam ships, nor will most Europeans. I now eschew cruising as being beneath me (seriously). I took one last try in Europe since I knew I wouldn't be on the ship much and it worked well for seeing the ports. But future vacations will be at true resorts and sunrises at sea will be on sailboats or yachts. I bid you goodbye!! Good luck and fun times to all who continue to sail

Yes, a resort would be nice once in awhile but I could not give up my cruise vacation. There is nothing like being out at sea. Resorts might be all inclusive but it not fair to compare it to the Oasis. There are too many other choices out there, besides you do not have to go to the specialty restaurants. Like always, it is a personal choice

If you are looking at those cruise line(s) which are making the ship the destination, then the article is accurate. There are others, which are not as 'nickle and dime'. However, I suppose that if one considers oneself a "sophisticated traveler", then perhaps those of us who continue to cruise "mainstream ships" are beneath you. Hopefully you will enjoy your future direction and wave to us from your yacht ... Bon voyage!

(From the article)

"In fact, a goodly number of Oasis' 24 distinct dining experiences carry a cover charge or a la carte pricing. And, should you hanker for room service in the wee hours, expect to pay for it."

I wonder what a "goodly number" is, less than half?

In reality, of the 24 dining venues on board Oasis, only 10 charge anything and of those 10 only four have a charge of $10 or more. Subtract the four that list "A la carte pricing" and that would leave 16 places you can eat for free or for the price of, or less than, a cocktail (over 60.5%), 17 for breakfast and lunch (Over 70.5%) because at the Solarium Bistro which charges $20 for dinner they do not charge for breakfast or lunch. The supper clubs are for those of us who enjoy an elegant dining experience once or twice a cruise. An experience, by the way that would cost waaay more at a restaurant at home. If you don't want to pay extra for a meal, then don't, it's just that simple. People who don't want to fill their tummies in 60 to 70 percent of the ship's restaurants are obvously not that hungry.

As far as the charge for room service in "the wee hours", we can thank the "goodly number" of drunken sailors who would come back to their cabin at night, order up a big room service order and then pass out before the order arrived, never answering the door, thus wasting a "goodly amount" of food. The theory is that if there is even a small service fee, maybe it would be worth staying up for.

Paying extra for a premium cut of meat? Hmmmm... the all-inclusives do that too and they also charge for premium brand liquor. Some also charge for lobster.

Guess it's just the way you spin it but to each his own.

BTW, why are we discussing Oasis on the Celebrity thread

There are cruise lines - and cruise ships - for every taste. The point is to find the one(s) that best fit your preferences.

June 7th, God willing, I'll mark the 60th anniversary of my first ocean voyage. I think I'm qualified to comment on changes in ocean liners and cruise ships over that span of time. I pick and choose those that best fit my tastes. If there's a mismatch, it's my fault - I should have known better and chosen a ship that's more my style. But the fact that I like, or dislike, a ship or cruise line doesn't mean that it doesn't fit the bill for someone else - and no one should be criticized for his/her preference.

And, yes, what's Oasis doing on Celebrity?
