Thanking Waiters

Celebrity states their European trained waitstaff is attentive, yet unobtrusive. I would agree with that. This past summer, while on a Celebrity cruise, I wondered if I was thanking my waiter and waiter assistant too much. Everytime they filled my water, removed a plate or gave me something, I thanked them. I felt that maybe my acknowledging him was pointing out that he was not being unobtrusive in a way. I know that when servants were a common existance in upperclass homes, waiters were there but not really there. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about being courteous and gracious but I also thought I may have been acknowledging their presence too much. Any thoughts?

a quiet "thankyou " always works for me. but I see your point. I don't think I'll change.

I think 'Thank You' is always appropriate.

Actually, when I was on celebrity (twice in 2001), I think they actually liked being thanked rather than 'ignored'. I always seemed to get excellent service with both the waiters and the stewards (the stewards always left me extra chocolates!).

sweeper,
We quietly thanked our waiter and waiter assistant each time they filled our water glass, gave us food, etc. While it might seem to us that we are being overly polite, these guys (and girls) hear this stuff on each cruise. I think no matter how it seems to be overly polite to us, just keep doing it. They might notice when you DO NOT thank them moreso than when you do. Our waiter was so nice, our wine steward (female) was fun to kid with and the bar attendant and assistant waiter were serious. We enjoyed their service during the whole cruise and our waiter only messed up one time on whose dessert was whose only because we confused him when we ordered. He really was nearly perfect.

I say thank you... it's the appropriate thing to do to another human being.
