Thankyou all for your tips about land/sea tours in Alaska. We tried to get the milepost guide book at our local waterstones but it is not available, but Amazon should do the trick.
We have a good start for our planning now though,
cheers,

Lee Gaukrodger and Sonia Horton ( his happy to be going to Alaska wife-to-be)

we are planing the last two weeks in july and the first week in August.
this is the most appropriate fore our holidays form work.
Do you know how viable 2 weeks self drive, stayind at b&b`s is. I know alaska is big, but is it too big to self-drive. We like the independance of going where we want to.
so the rough plan is to spend Ither the first or last week doing a cruise, and the other two weeks touring on land. wWe just did a similar thing in South Africa, where we went on a guided safari for a week and then drove ourselves along the south coast for the second and third weeks. The whale wathing on the south coast of south africxa is amazing (southern wright whales calving), so we hope to see some whales in alaska too.

later...
lee.

Alaska is a wonderful place to self drive and stay in B&Bs. I think that two weeks will give you sufficient time to see Alaska's interior prior to going on a one week cruise. You'll want to start your trip in Anchorage, as the rental cars are less expensive and you can drop you car in the same location as you picked it up before obtaining transportation to Seward or Whittier to embark on your cruise.

As you are coming in July, you'll want to make those B&B reservations as soon as possible. The better known properties fill up well in advance!

Hi Britain: You are going to love your holiday adventure. It might do you good to check out cruisecritic and cruisemates b/c people comment alot on the different tours. As well, check out the websites for the various ports that you might be stopping at for information about these ports, as well as, independent tour operators. Certainly do not restrict your self to ship tours - they are sometimes more expensive. In the Skagway port - you can rent a car and drive to the Yukon. Many people have done that and have enjoyed themselves b/c it is flexible and you can make your own time schedule. Some of the things that are bonus is the change of scenery - coastal, barren and boreal forest - beautiful lakes along the way, scenic town of Carcross, the littlest desert, and the famous blue green Emerald Lake. The horseback tour I went on was excellent and we got the most beautiful view of Emerald Lake with snow capped mountains of Carcross in the background. The horseback tour is at a country ranch just past Emerald Lake on the way to Whitehorse. You can check out this tour www.southeasttours.com They also have other tours. If you check each port you'll be able to find out about other tours.
