Hawai'ian memories

As many on C@ know, my first trip to Hawai'i dates back to 1950 (when it was the Territory of Hawai'i) - probably before most @ddicts were born! From time to time, I'll add a few snippets of memories between then and now on this Roll Call.

My late Uncle served in the Pacific during WWII, and never returned to the Mainland. He settled in Honolulu, which is one reason we would visit there regularly. He was in show business - owned a very popular nightclub in the immediate post-war period, and then pretty much settled into being a radio personality. Hawai'i became our 50th State in 1959, and the official celebrations were held July 4, 1960. We were there. He decided I should learn how to hula since I loved Hawai'ian music so much, and he arranged lessons for me during that July, 1960 visit. There were many festivities on the Islands on July 4th, and my Uncle emceed a luau at the Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu. Of course, there was the traditional food, the traditional music and dancers. The only thing that wasn't "of course" - he called me up on stage to dance the first of the hulas I had learned. I was ready to run out the nearest exit, but he coaxed me on stage...and I danced my first hula publicly - a song named "Sea Breeze". I can't find a video with the words sung, but I'll leave you with this YouTube video of the song.
