??Tipping Private/Non Cruise Ship Excursion Operators

We have a day sail booked on the Winifred in St Thomas. We will be paying the $120.00 per person for the sail to the owner who is also the captain for the day. My question is what is customary for tipping. Should I tip the captain who I have already paid for the excursion or just tip the first mate who is working for tip money and does not own the boat. Your thoughts on this are appreciated. What would be an appropriate tip amount for either person.

I took a tour with a private vendor in St Thomas--the guy who drove us around was the opwner of the bus. We tipped 20%. which was $5.00 Personally If you have a good time- tip accordingly.

If the Capt is the owner, I generally don't tip them, unless they really go out of their way to make sure you have a great time. Any mates, guides or divemasters I will tip $5 to $10.

I don't tip owners, but I do tip staff. In your case I would most likely tip 5 to 10 dollars to each mate, unless there is like more then 3 or 4 staff, then I guess I would have to figure out a different formula. If there is only one or two mates, then I would tip closer to the 10 $.
Remember Winnifred is making decent moola, and her staff is not getting nearly the same.
