We are getting ready to go on our first cruise and I have a general tipping question please, I hope its not too stupid.

I heard that we can pay all the tips in advance. Now I am wondering if the staff knows that I have done so, or do they still expect a tip from me, or/and will they treat me better if I hand them the tip directly?
