tipping question

A friend of mine recently went aboard the Carnival Sensation- she said they asked her for the tipping total up-front before she got on the boat. She thought she rec'd terrible service from some of the staff, and was told she could "adjust" her amt in the end. It just so happened the "adjustment line" was miles long on the last day and she didn't want to waste cruise time. Is there truth to this? Shouldn't they wait until the end to get the tip? Where is the incentive for great servive if youve prepaid the tip?

Carnival has what is called reverse tipping, that is your tips are added to your sail and sign account (the very first entry), you can go to the pursers desk any time durning your cruise and adjust the tips up or down or have them removed and tip in cash on the last night. You may also prepay your tips before your cruise thru your TA. The prepaid tips can not be removed or adjusted.
The one exception the the above is that on 2 day cruises to nowhere, tips of $20 per guest must be prepaid.
The reason Carnival went to the reverse tipping is due to results of a guest survey. Personally I like the reverse tipping as I do not have to carry a lot of cash and have found service to be no different than with other methods of tipping.

Hi,
I have never been asked this at boarding on Carnival. What usually happens is they automatically charge the customary or recommended tip amounts to your Sail and Sign Account toward the end of the cruise. You get a print out of this on the last night of the cruise and then you can adjust this in either direction as you see fit. Did your friend secure her ship board account with cash versus a credit card? If it was cash, that may have been why they had to ask her this up front. I have always had great service on Carnival and sometimes have given extra cash tips out to the actual individuals on the last night of the cruise.

Never have liked this since Carnival implemented it. I used to tip more than the recommended amount, but since they charge me for it up front, that's all they get.

When I wanted to adjust my tips, all I did was call the Purser's Office and it was done within 5 minutes for me. No lines! It worked well as I prefer to give cash tips.

I asked my waiter how this was working out for employees and he said that in the past there were some people who did not tip at all so it was working out fine. I recieved the same excellent service from everyone as when the tips were paid at the end in cash.

I like the tipping included with the cruise. I always hated going to the casino or pursor and getting bills changed and then stuffing the envelopes for the last night.

I usually add to the tip for my steward/stewardess and waiter/busboy...as I think they are the most important people on the cruise to me.

I have been known to give the maitre di a nice tip if: (1) he has accomodated me on my table request and (2) if he shows up at my table during mealtimes.

I like the fact that it's added on to our sail & sign card. I also take some note cards that have a nice scenic picture that says "Wisconsin" on them and usually put some extra $$ for the room stewart and waitstaff with a note thanking them for making our vacation special.

I liked it too. It doens't matter if you used cash or credit card on your sail and sign card, they added it first thing. I didnt have to worry about it. The Matri'de was not included and had to be submitted separtely in an envelope they provided on the last day of sailing. We also tipped our wait staff extra because they did an awesome job. Gave us extra meals, recommend great choices (good and bad) and were just plain nice and seemed to enjoy serving us. Plus our room steward was special. He was really nice. We tipped extra for him as well.

as far as tipping on my past carnival cruises , Yes , for the beer & wine , its included in the little receipt you sign when getting a cocktail...
But as far as tipping the cabin guy and waiter .... I didn't .. I know what you're all thinking.. How could you do this? Well , I didn't want to put a huge $50 bill on the table and leave... and besides I had gambling to do! They get paid anyways by carnival. But its at your discresion.

it's unfortunate that you feel that way jester. I suppose tipping at a restaurant isn't necessary either because they get paid buy the restaurant. If you call $2.12 an hour getting paid. I find it amusing that people who fail to tip or tip poorly, whether it's because they feel it isn't necessary (they're already getting paid)or feel their service was sub-par(compared to what?), are the ones who always complain about the whole tipping issue. With the exception of fast food, what restaurant can you go to, have a good 4 coarse meal and it be acceptable to leave a $3.50-$4.00 tip? Let's take it a step further and say you have breakfast and lunch at that same restaurant and still only pay the $4.00 for the whole day. Could our expectations be a little out of wack?

The people that work these ships do depend on tips because the cruise lines do not pay well. If they paid what an American would expect to get paid, the cost of a cruise, which in my opinion is one of the best vacation values available, would go up so much that it would no longer be affordable to most.

I didn't post this to pick on you jester. You just got caught in the crossfire.

Hi cruisers,

Just to add a comment or two. On the Pride last May I packed 12 beers and some cokes and took a collapseable cooler. By tipping the steward 2 bucks every couple of days I had a full cooler of ice every day and nice cold beers on deck. Well worth it to me.
Remember though if you write a note for your steward make it simple. The first day I wrote a nice long note thanking him ahead of time and left a couple of bucks for my ice but then the ice didn't come. It took me by surprise until my wife pointed out that he probably couldn't read English very well. When I went back on deck I just left a nice simple "Fill with Ice please" and that did the trick. So keep it simple.

My wife likes wine with dinner so we took a nice bottle or two on board. She also likes an extra glass of ice to put in the wine to chill it down some.We weren't charged a corking fee and after one dinner the wine showed up every night and the glass of ice. The waiter's assistant took very good care of her. I slid him an extra $20 during the week. If I get good service I tip well. The folks that work these cruise ships work very long hours for next to nothing to make sure we have a good time. I think we can afford to tip them. An American would never work those hours for what these folks get paid.

Sorry if I sounded like I was on a soapbox.

We just got back Fri 11/07. I like the tipping. We did not use the main dinning room once. I ajusted the tipping and split what should have paid to the dinning room and gave it to our room steward (who was just great) and the folks in the grill.
