Hi,I have never been asked this at boarding on Carnival. What usually happens is they automatically charge the customary or recommended tip amounts to your Sail and Sign Account toward the end of the cruise. You get a print out of this on the last night of the cruise and then you can adjust this in either direction as you see fit. Did your friend secure her ship board account with cash versus a credit card? If it was cash, that may have been why they had to ask her this up front. I have always had great service on Carnival and sometimes have given extra cash tips out to the actual individuals on the last night of the cruise.
