Ya know Earl, on Celebrity they follow the industry standard. $10 per passenger per day. When you have them add it to your ship board account it comes to slightly less than that. Not quite sure what formula they use when they calculate it.

Tipping now is automatic added to your cruise bill on Celebrity ships.

The amount is base upon your room category. example suite guests pay more than CC guests., etc. The amount for tipping categories can be found on the Celebrity web site.

From the Celebrity website

Gratuities

For your convenience, we will automatically add gratuities for your restaurant and stateroom services to your onboard Seapass account on a daily basis in the following amounts, which may be adjusted at your discretion: $11.50 per person per day for guests in staterooms ($12.00 per person per day for guests in Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms and $15.00 per person per day for guests in Suites). These service gratuities are based on the following recommended amounts:

Restaurant Service* Per Person Per Day

Waiter $3.65
Assistant Waiter $2.10
Dining Room Management $1.00

Stateroom Service* Per Person Per Day

Butler (Suites Only) $3.50
Stateroom Service $3.50 ($4.00 for Concierge Class and AquaClass staterooms)
Alternative Service*
Other Service Personnel $1.25

Beverage Service personnel are acknowledged with a 15% service charge which will be automatically added to the bill.

*Please note that gratuities may be shared with other crew members depending on the particular service requirement.

Only U.S. currency is accepted aboard the ships, and personal checks are not accepted. Credit cards can be used to secure cash by using the ATM located near the casino onboard.

Currency exchange services are available onboard at the Guest Relations Desk. The shops, lounges, shore excursions, and AquaSpa operate on a cashless system; therefore you must use your Seapass Account when purchasing beverages and services throughout the ship.

Just off Solstice. $11.50 per day and added daily to your account. Worked just fine. I don't know of anyone that had occasion to vary the amounts at all. We certainly found it a painless way to tip. It all happened without any action or advice from us. We had a cat 2B.

The staff we had certainly were worth those amounts... more actually :)

We also went with the pre-paid tipping, but service was so good we gave our crewmen quite a bit extra on the last day.

I also give generous tips during the cruise (to my fav bartenders) and on the last day as well, in addition to being "bullied" into prepay. Since I haven't sailed since December, I'm really curious to find out if the rumblings are accurate, which is that the service has suffered since the crew is now "guaranteed" tips. Glad you got great service. That is X's brand point. Service.

Noticed no difference at all aboard the Solstice. Still the best of the lines we have cruised.

But you have the option to increase it or "opt out" if you wish.

There seems to be some confusion with terminology. Prepaid gratuities are paid with your final cruise payment. Automatic gratuities are added to your shipboard account daily and settled automatically with your shipboard account the last day onboard.

I would think that you have the choice of either lowering or
increasing . it would not be call a tip . it would be call a service charge.

I agree and wonder why no one has said that before in the thousands of argumentative threads on the subject??

You nailed it on the head - it is NOT TIPPING AT ALL!!!
It's a "service charge". Period. Just like every drink has a built in "service charge".

Tipping involves free will and individual attention to specific servers, stewards etc.

So let's call it what it is - a service charge which will be added to your bill unless you request it be removed and face the wrath of the staff who do indeed, find out, that you had it pulled.

I think NCL calls it a service charge and you cannot allow it.
At least they are up front about it. Too bad the cruise lines don't pay the crew a normal salary.
