Does Carnival have a new way for tipping the room steward, waiter and assist. waiter?
Do they take it off you sign and sail card? Do all the ships have this now? Why did they change the way you tip? I was just wondering b/c we are going on a cruise in Feb. We have been on 4 cruises and we always gave the tip envelope. Sorry so many questions.

thanks, ally :)

Most, if not all, Carnival ships automatcialy charge your sail & sign card for tips. Personally I think the policy sucks. I prefer to tip on a personal basis.

I agree with you. We always have the tips taken off our sail & sign
card. We like to give our tips to the person.

Hi Ally,

I do not know the actual reason why Carnival has done this. I do know that the people who work on a ship such as a room steward or dinning staff are not paid very well and depend mainly on their tips for money ( I know someone who works on a cruise). These staff members tend to get stiffed alot by passengers which really stinks in my opinion. It happens more often than not. I believe this is why Carnival began this policy.

Having the tips removed will take you walking to the Purser's office or a phone call and they will gladly remove the charges. It is a shame that people like us who reward people for their work have to be inconvenienced because of people with less class. I to like to hand deliver my tips and thank the person who served me so I just have the tips removed. If you take care of this as you board it will take approx. 5 min.

Enjoy your cruise,
Denise

Tipping is a real sore spot with us. The last time we cruised with Princess, the workers made a big issue out of tipping. (A real scene) I think the cruise ships ought to pay their help reasonably, so that they don't have to beg for tips! We prefer Holland America and their no tipping policy.

I used to deal Blackjack in Atlantic City for many years and worked for tips. Solicitation of tips (we called them tokes) is strictly prohibited. I agree with the above poster (enelra)about workers begging for tips. I get so turned off when a cabin stewart or waiter starts handing me their "schpeal" about how little the cruise ship pays them or that they have to send every penny they make back to family. That is just low class!

As a person who worked for tips, I tend to over tip when I receive good service. If a crew member starts soliciting for their tip - I start deducting from their tip and write them a little note explaining why. Soliciting tips is not good service!!!

When a crew member signs on to work (in a tipped position) on a cruise ship they FULLY know that tipping is not required by passengers and that people will stiff them. It goes with the job, and if they are so bent out of shape about it or feel that they need to solicate their tips - then maybe it's time to find a new job.

Yes, it does suck when a crew member gives outstanding service, only to be stiffed. But to stoop to begging for tips is worse.

JMHO............

Does Carnival have a new way for tipping the room steward, waiter and assist. waiter? YES - total = $9.75 per day per person - $3.50 waiter, $2.00 Assistant, $3.50 steward & $.75 for the Alternative dining i.e. buffet.

Do they take it off you sign and sail card? YES- it is automatically charged to your S&S account. You have the personal option of making changes at the Pursors desk. Either eliminate, reduce, add too, etc. You are totally in control.

Do all the ships have this now? Almost - it is being implemented on the Carnival ships in 2002. Princess had it as did Celebrity cruise lines that we sailed on within the last 2 years.

Why did they change the way you tip? With alternative dining venues, many servers where not receiving their fare share of gratuities. Also, cruisers often ran out of "cash". This process makes it easier and fair to everyone. You can also offer an additional cash tip to whomever you feel may deserve it. The maitre de is not included, but an envelope is available if you feel he has provided a service for you.
Bon Voyage

Hi !
Just thought you might want to double check on the policy for Holland America. They have a tipping not required policy, not a no tipping policy. Big difference. Of course, their wonderful staff earns and receives tips from customers just as the other cruise lines staffs do.
