Tipping

We recently cruised Alaska aboard the Sun Princess. Learned this info about tipping from the last day's presentation by Cruise director Dan: The daily room gratuity of $3.50 is divided by 5 and room steward gets 1/5 of the $3.50. The daily meal gratuity of $6.50 is divided by 7 and your dining room waiter and assistant waiter receive 1/7 each. The additional is spread around to horizon court servers, pizzera servers, grill servers. Do not remember who gets a share of the room gratuity.

WOW..I am SO GLAD we gave extra to our waiter, asst waiter and to our room sterward the last night of the cruise..in cash!!!.on top of the automatic tipping on our account.....thats a lot of splitting..and they bust their tail to make our cruise wonderful..:(..DH Mark and I will always be sure to give them extra now..I know they all work hard but that works out to a pittance for the main ones we see..:(..Thanks for sharing..:daisy..Joanne

Wow... Why divide the room stewards tips?? I would assume laundry and other staff having to do with cabins are paid higher than the cabin stewards. Like in a restaurant, waiters earn a small amount per house but the cooks earn a lot more. I can uderstand the waiters, sorta.... I assumed they all took turns rotating in the horizon court, and things like that. Maybe not.

Well you ask why the splitting , I will tell you why because the cruiser is the one paying the wages not the cruise lines. I too agree with the wait staff having to split( even in land based restaurants they will split tips with bus boy and dishwashers etc>), but I too do not understand the cabins steward having to share with more than say one assistant, but it seems that you are correct in that the laundry workers etc, are NOT paid a better wage, they are in fact probably paid even worse, and hope to work their way up !

I am sorry to say that the more I think about it the slimyier ( sp) the cruise lines come off as employers. Sort of a sweat shop, like the ones in Asia that pay their workers 10 cents an hour to make Nike etc. and just the Officers and entertainers make decent money( and what a coincidence that they are mostly North American or British) and most of the workers are from poorer countries.
