we're going on our very first cruise for our honeymoon, and were wondering whether you recommend getting a balcony for Alaska. will it be too cold to use it? would it be easy to view the sights from the deck?

please help.

We done it both ways. Many will say you NEED a balcony in AK. A lot depends upon the price differential and your ability to spend money. Excursions are expensive. We dress very warmly and spend much time on the deck so a balcony needs to be not much more expensive. For the extra cost of a balconey sometimes you could take another cruise. So as in many things in life it's a tradeoff, money vs. luxury.

If I was ever going to get a balcony it would be in Alaska, however there is plenty of deck space and plenty of places on the ship to do viewing from if you want to save the money.

Two good answers above. I would add. Honey Moon ???? How much time are you going to spend in your cabin? ...deck might be nice to have even if it is cold. You won't have to go far for a bit of fresh air. :)

I wouldn't want to go to Alaska without the balcony. My two greatest memories in Alaska were standing on our balcony watching the whales -- long before they were announced over the PA, and Glacier Bay, watching the sea lions and glaciers calving from the balcony. We had room service bring a pot of coffee and hot chocolate to the room. We added our own "flavorings" and if we got cold it was a quick step back inside. We were sooooo comfortable and never missed any of the sights. You also won't have as many background "narrations" in your video tape when you get home as you get from the open decks. We will be dong our third Alaska cruise in June--with a balcony.

I'm also a pro balcony person. I feel that I wouldn't have gotten as much nature watching out on the top decks. I recall watching whales that were never announced. We spend a lot of time on the balcony.

In Glacier bay when the ship rotated to the other side we then ran up to the upper decks. Very crowded.

Try to make sure the balcony is covered as well. We were still able to sit out in spite of rain.

Thanks so much for all of your input!! We've booked a suite with a private verandah! We are so excited and can't wait to have hot chocolate and coffee on our own private balcony!

Thanks again!
