We done it both ways. Many will say you NEED a balcony in AK.  A lot depends upon the price differential and your ability to spend money.  Excursions are expensive.  We dress very warmly and spend much time on the deck so a balcony  needs to be not much more expensive.  For the extra cost of a balconey sometimes you could take another cruise.  So as in many things in life it's a tradeoff, money vs. luxury.
