How is the snorkeling? We are going on the Grand princessEastern Caribbean on July 20th. Should we book an excursion or take our chances when we get there???? Also, is it better to bring your own snorkle gear?????

Trunk Bay is easy to do on your own, plus that way you can spend more time there if you wish. Snorkeling is definitely good. I always recommend bringing your own gear for fit, comfort and sanitation.

You wade into the water to snorkle. A little way out there is a snorkle trail to follow. Little stone plaques at the bottom telling which coral and fish are in the area.

My favorite place in the world! Well, so far! Snorkeling was great, we saw a small octopus! Go on your own, it's east to get too and if you don't have your own snorkel gear it's really cheap to rent. Enjoy!

Definitely beautiful. But a little crowded to be something I would consider one of the most romantic spots in the world. :)

I agree it's crowded. Because of that, we left Trunk for Cinnamon Bay- had it almost to ourselves. And Hawksnest (closest to the pier) looked deserted- will try that next time.

Unfortunately the snorkeling was nonexistent the day we were there. The visibility was nil. Guess it was just the water conditions that day, plus all the crowds stirring up the sand @ Trunk Bay. Will try again this time and hope for better luck!

We liked Sapphire Beach in St. Thomas as a nice, romantic beach. There weren't that many people there and it was BEAUTIFUL.

Just an alternative for you.

We try to get to Trunk Bay early before the crowds. In July, we are going to go to Cinnamon as a second stop. I guess we are spoiled, because as much as we loved the water and the beach, we thought the snorkelling was only average. My son's wife thought it was great, though she hadn't snorkelled anywhere before. So far, we've not snorkelled anywhere in the Caribbean that compares to some of the places we snorkel in Hawaii, so that may be clouding our judgment.

We take our own masks and snorkels, but we rent fins because they are the bulky/heavy part to travel with.

We were at Trunk Bay last week and did not find it particularly crowded (guess it is off season). I have snorkeled all over the Caribbean and felt that it was excellent at Trunk Bay. I always carry my own equipment, and the ferry ride to St. John is relatively inexpensive, so I recommend that you do it own your own.
