Tulum and Xel-Ha. Carnival's excursion or do it yourself?

I'm taking my 12yo and 15yo on the Elation 12/26/05. I've been to Tulum and Xel-Ha on an organized tour before with my husband and thought we may have preferred to try the black sand beach at Tulum, more time at Xel-Ha, etc. Has anyone tried taking cabs from PDC to Tulum then to Xel-Ha then back to PDC? Is it necessary to buy tickets in advance for Xel-Ha or are they just as available at the gate? I'm fluent in Spanish and have vacationed often in the Mayan Riviera so I'm not terribly worried about getting lost. Thanks.

We're only in port from 7am- 4pm. I phoned a friend this morning who had taken the cruise line excursion to Tulum and Xel-Ha. They had bus trouble and ended up returning to the ship 2 hours late, but since the excursion had been booked through the cruise line, the ship had to wait for them. Guess that answers my question. I'll take the safe bet and book with Carnival. Thanks.

I agree- I thought maybe you wre there until 11pm. But since you are thre only til 4 the ships excursion is the way to go. There isnt really that much of a difference pricewise or time wise to get to the Tulum-- youwill have to get off the ship and take a taxi to the ferry which will take you to Playa del Carmen then you get a taxi for the hour trip to tulum. Lots safer to do it with the ship. Have a great time.
