Tulum via rental car???

RCCL offers 8 hour excursions from Cozumel to Tulum with shopping or with Xel Ha (~$250 for a family of 4). I want to see Tulum but don't want to do the shopping and don't really want to pay $250. We'll be there in mid-November, 2002.

Has anyone tried doing this on their own? Perhaps renting a car in Playa Del Carmen instead of using the bus tour?

I've been to Tulum once, several years back... I don't know about renting a car, but I do know that the bus ride was long. Im not certain how far, but a considerable distance. If you do rent the car, please come back and tell us.... we'd like to know how it works out.

The problem is that you would have to take a ferry from Cozumel to the mainland city of Playa del Carmen and then rent a car or find someone to take you. Maybe someone has done it can give more advice, but it seems more diifcult than a regular day trip.I would recommend renting a car and going around Cozumel to see San Gervasio ruins which aren't as good as Tulum, but still enjoyable and then go snorkleing. You could also just go snorkeling or see if anyone knows how easy it is to take the ferry and find a car. The ferry should only take 1 hour each way at most and then getting a car there, I don't know about that.

Drove to Tulum once - but it was from Cancun. Several years ago but I THINK it took 1 1/2 - 2 hours. the drive wasn't difficult. We also did Xelha (spelling) and really enjoyed it. I don't think you could do all that in the time allowed for a port stop if you do it yourself. I think both are well worth seeing/doing and although I I'm no a big proponent of cruise line tours I don't think $250 for this one) (two?) is too bad.

Tulum was not as impressive as I had hoped. It was an interesting time but faded quickly. the people who took some of the other excursions seemed to have had a better time.

I went to Tulum with my DH last March. We enjoyed it greatly. I would only do it through a ship sponsored tour though. I hate to think of the problems you might encounter if you were to rent a car and drive by yourself. It's quite a distance...car breaks down and you're out of luck. Traffic delays and you miss the ship...I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to be "stranded" in Mexico...JMHO

I am not sure how much time you have. Take ferry to Play del carmen. In centre of town you can get on new air cond mini van that mostly locals use . They are white with Green letters. they say Playa del carmen- Tulum on the side. For the equivalent of about $3 USD one way per person you can take this to Tulum. They come every 15 minutes or so and the distance is between 50-65 Kilometres, so allow an hour(Warning wear seat belts all Mexicans drive fast. That means Taxis, tour buses, locals everyone)

Last year I paid $3 USD to get in to the ruins. Basically you can do this trip for about $10-15. each plus cost of Ferry to Playa.

I picked up the mini van on the Highway when we were staying in Puerto Aventuras and from there it is 35 kilometre to Tulum. The hotel taxi wanted $75 USD per person, cost me $7 for the whole trip. I also took the mini van from the highway adjacent to Puerto Aventuras to Playa Del Carmen on another day .

Nice thing about doing this way is you can go, see the ruins, and leave when you want to . They are nice but not awesome and certainly not worth the money the Ship charges.

I would say 1 hour to get over on the Ferry, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes each way to Tulum and 2 hours at the ruins, so about 6- 7 hours on your own. If your ship does not leave until the evening you will be fine.

DOn't miss the Mexican guys in costume in the town of Tulum, they do some sort of dance and acrobatic feat around a very tall post, and lower themselves upside down. hard to explain, must be seen.

There is a beach at playa that you can use and swim in while you wait for ferry

Good Luck and have fun

I just did the tulum excursion is September on the Victory. The price seems high but it includes the ferry and the bus ride. If you do not do an excursion I am not sure how you would get to Playa Del Carmen. The only ferrys I saw available were for cruise passengers who bought the excursion. If you find a way to get a ferry ride it is a very easy route to get there. I think we made one turn coming out of Playa Del Carmen and it was a straight way to it. Also the shopping maybe is for 30 minutes. They just take you to one store that sells jewelry and rugs and and the end there is a small gift shop (overpriced)..

Also in Mexico I would stick with the cruise tours, it's not the nicest place.. When you come out of the one giftshop there is guy standing at the back door with a machine gun! So like I said in Mexico stick with the cruise sponsered tours unless you plain to just stay in Cozumel.
