I went to Tulum with my DH last March.  We enjoyed it greatly.   I would only do it through a ship sponsored tour though.  I hate to think of the problems you might encounter if you were to rent a car and drive by yourself.  It's quite a distance...car breaks down and you're out of luck.  Traffic delays and you miss the ship...I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to be "stranded" in Mexico...JMHO
