Update on my ex-husband

Some of you may remember that back in March I was asking for prayers for my daughter's father as he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Well, he's been battling ever since. I finally convinced him to come here to M.D. Anderson and he started treatment here back in May. They still haven't been able to get him into remission yet and pretty much his only hope now is to get into remission and then have a bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant (depending on what you want to call it). Anyway......even if the doctors could get him into remission, there would still be hurdles to overcome before the transplant could even take place........#1 - they would have to find a donor that matched, and even harder to do - #2 - get the insurance company to pay for it. Needless to say, insurance companies do NOT want to pay for this procedure as they say it is experimental, AND it cost close to a million dollars (conservatively)......there was a whole movie about this (The Rainmaker with Matt Damon). As far as I'm concerned, ALL cancer treatment is experimental because you have no idea whether it will work or not. Anyway......... he does have a brother, and thank God, his brother was tested and is a match!! And.........today.....the insurance company called him and said they have approved the procedure!!!

So now.....if the docs can just get him into remission. He finished up yet another round of chemo this past Sunday, so please say a prayer that this round will kick his butt into remission! They cannot do the transplant unless he is in remission or at the very least, no more than 20% blast cells. But he has a better chance if he is in full remission.

Sorry to be so long winded....but please keep him in your prayers.

Prayers are ongoing! So far, he's VERY lucky, with both a donor and insurance willing to pay. That's a very bad disease and he's got a long road ahead of him, but prayers work. If you're going to face that hurdle, M.D. Anderson is a fine place to be.

I am always amazed at the bravery shown by those facing the biggest hurdles life can put in your way. Bless him. Prayers will continue that he finds himself in remission and that the transplant is a success.

I agree with Glo. Reading things like this makes me ashamed at the things I complain about. Positive thoughts to your ex.

I wish your Ex the best in working toward the transplant. We have a neighbor who has just gone to Baylor with his 2nd round of this CR*P in 15 yrs. He is currently being evaluated for stem cell replacement. Sending healing thoughts to both of them.

My friend with terminal brain cancer went through this transplant recently. it was very difficult, and the pics she sent me from the hospital scared the heck out of me, but she bounced back remarkably after. Prayers continue.
