Hi all. I have heard alot on this board that room upgrades are an exclusive perk of being a return guest. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone that is not a past guest been upgraded? Thanks!

I was upgraded 6 catagories on my first HAL cruise. Past psasenger status has little to do with upgrades from my experience.

I was upgrades on my first Carival cruise from 4A (Inside lowest regular stateroom) to 6A (oceanview). They say they never upgrade from inside to out, but not true.

Wow this is good to know! I am a past guest, but I don't think my TA booked it as that. Does anyone know if there is any way to call Carnival and let them know you are a past guest? I would likke to be able to go to the past guest party. Thanks for all of your help!

My first cruise was the 7-day Jubilee , and yes I was upgraded to a window cabin on the Riviera deck instead of an inside cabin.
All the other ccl cruises I was upgraded more to a higher deck but ALL were indoor cabins. We didn't care though , any thing above the Riviera deck was fine by us. You can't feel the waves as rough above the Main deck.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the "upgrade fairy" Anyone can be "upgraded".

And on VERY, VERY, rare occasions someone gets a REAL upgrade like inside to outside, or balcony to suite. I've even heard about inside to suite upgrades.

Other than those few real upgrades, the rest of the "upgrades" are illusions. They move you from a bottom deck inside to the next deck up but still inside. The ONLY difference is that there is an unmeasurable amount of movement less in the higher deck.. If you get moved up multiple decks, you almost always end up with one of the least desirable cabins on your new deck. [That's why it was available in the first place].

But don't worry about that, less desirable cabins are near elevators, near the front or back [under the galley or disco IS bad] and other locations that are perceived as not so hot. Front or back of the ship is fine and near elevators is fine as well. You will never hear the elevators..
But you are still in the exact same size and type cabin as before but you think you got something for nothing.
Don't be in any way concerned about "upgrades" just enjoy your cruise no matter which cabin you're in.
In 40 cruises I have only once received a real upgrade [inside to outside]. Nowadays we just book balconies on the stern and wouldn't accept an "upgrade".

Sometimes there are past guest deals where you can book a lower deck and receive a multi-deck guarantee upgrade! On top of those, the upgrade fairy sprinkles her dust on the first time guests as well as the past guests indiscriminately!

My 1st Carnival cruise last year- upgraded from lowest inside to oceanview, same withe the 2nd.
3rd Carnival cruise- booked lowest inside, stayed inside.

1st Royal Caribbean cruise (last week) upgraded from lowest inside to nice oceanview.

Have an inside guarantee for 1-12-04 so we'll see what happens...
