It happens but usually it will be the same overall cabin type but a better catagory. Like Don said, BE to BB or something like that. On rare occassions passengers get really great upgrades, not often.

Upgrades are free, Upsells cost a little more.
What you got was an Upsell.

How do we inquire about upsells? Was your upsell from the balcony to a penthouse $400 per person? We are in a BA room on the Star (10632) for an August 23rd cruise to Alaska and were just talking about upgrades tonight. Might be something we would like to consider.

I have booked a CC GTY on the NCL Gem on 11/16/08 (Transatlantic Barcelona - NYC). What are my chances of getting upgraded to a balcony? This will be my second NCL cruise.

Do NCL actually give upgrades?

This is a real question, I am shortly booking my first NCL and an aquaintance has told me they do not upgrade very often. I was told it was usualy an upsell and you had to pay an additional commission.

This sounds strange from personal experiences on Carnival cruises

When the price dropped on a cruise we already booked, I got upgraded from a regular ol' inside room to a superior inside.. a few extra square feet.

We too, just got a great upgrade, it did cost us a few $$ (40.00 each) so it really was an up-sell, but for $80.00 we went from a CC category, outside to a BD category, balcony and got a $150 OBC..I can't consider that an up-sell. This is the first time in all my years of traveling something like this has happened. We are on cloud "9"

Nita! your post made me call today and get an upsell on mine.. $40 for both and we went from bottom deck superior inside to 5th deck superior ocean view.. could have gotten 7th deck but all obstructed views up there! It took away my OBC , but it wasn't much anyways.. plus if they reduce again.. bet you I am gonna call and ask about that OBC!! haha!

We are on the Pearl March 8. We booked a balcony (the cheapest BC with the guarantee) and were just upgraded to a BA. The difference as I understand it is: Closer to mid-ship as opposed to forward or aft. I have read aft on lower decks, you can sometimes hear and feel engine vibration. People complained they have trouble sleeping sometimes. Forward you can experience more motion of the ship. I have no idea if it is true or not. We were upgraded to deck ten so we were really excited. My thought is the higher up the better. Better view and farther away from the engines. We sailed HAL last year and got upgraded from an obstructed view to a full view, so I guess we are now lucky twice. I was wondering if it makes a difference if it is your first time sailing with a line and they want you to come back, or if it is done as a business decision. Maybe easier to sell a cheaper cabin?
Good luck.

Re: ncl gem

Noise in normally not an issue in an aft stateroom or on a higher deck. You should be fine. In fact my favorite cabins are aft...
