I found out the hard way, If you should guarantee your cabin and wait till the very last moment to check-in, you received the best upgrades. Sometimes it does pay to show-up late.
Princess usually assigns all cabins several days before sailing. So, it wouldn't matter when you check in...your cabins has already been assigned by then.
However, as far as hotel rooms go, this premise works pretty good. I've gotten some great upgrades by checking in late!
For those of you who think you won't get an upgrade if you bought the cheap fare, we got an upgrade to outside from inside. We booked the cruise 2 weeks before it departed and didn't have a cabin assignment until about 4 days before the cruise.
First Time Cruising and our travel agent recommended trying to book BF Guarantee as we wanted a balcony. We received an upgrade 3 weeks after booking to a BB on Baja with a very large deck and 279 sq ft. cabin!
We received an upgrade from an interior to an exterior cabin aprox. 30 days before sailing on our most recent cruise. It was our 1st upgrade in 6 cruises with Princess. It can happen and I don't think whether you've paid in full or not has any bearing on it. Like most things in life, it's just a matter of luck & timing.
