According to our documents our cell phones will work on the ship. Does anyone have a clue how much it costs?

Check with your cell provider. Our Verizon tri-modes did work in our cabin while at sea. The service was sporadic. The cost was 2.49 a minute that was billed to my cell phone bill. You need the international plan which was free.

They claim the phone will not work in certain areas, ie casino, lounges, dining room etc, (which is fine by me)

The text messaging and voice mail features did not work until we got back onto American soil.

The roaming charges while in port vary, depending on what port you are in. Verizon has the Countries and rates listed on their sight.

Verizon also states that you update the programing on your phone prior to leaving home for the updated roaming software.

What features and services work or not will be based on your phone and provider.

When I went on the Sea Princess, it did not have any signal on the first day at sea but on some islands like Barbados in the Caribbean, it had the network T-Mobile, which was funny cos thats the network i am on atm. Some of the rooms that phones will not work is the casino, a place called Razzmatazz??, and the theatre. :)

My phone (with AT&T/Cingular) worked very well during our 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise in 2006. There were intermittent areas of "no service" but no extra charges on calls made from St. Thomas or St. Maarten were incurred.

On our shorter trip on the Disney Wonder to the Bahamas, however, I had patchy service and paid outrageous per minute charges from Nassau.

January 2, 2008 Press Release that follows:

PRESS RELEASE
MCP WINS CONTRACT TO INSTALL WIRELESS MOBILE TELEPHONY SERVICES ONBOARD ALL
SHIPS IN PRINCESS CRUISES, CUNARD LINES AND P&O CRUISES AUSTRALIA’S FLEET

Arendal/Santa Clarita, January 2, 2008:

Maritime Communications Partner AS (MCP), fully owned by Telenor ASA, has signed a contract to install and operate the cellular network onboard all ships in Princess Cruises, Cunard Lines and P&O Cruises Australia’s fleet. The agreement covers 21 ships at the signing of the contract. The fleet of cruise ships has a passenger capacity of approximately 45,000, as well as a crew of 20,000. The MCP service will allow everyone onboard to use their own mobile phones when sailing on the high seas.

“This contract represents a definite breakthrough for MCP in the American cruise marketâ€Â, says PÃ¥l Bjørdal (CEO of MCP). “We have won this contract despite hard competition, and we are proud to have been chosen to supply one of the most distinguished and demanding cruise operators in the market. The agreement with Princess Cruise Lines will be an excellent platform to further build our growth strategy onâ€Â, says Bjørdal.

“We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with MCP for this service, and believe that MCP will be a good business partner for us," says Anthony Kaufman (Senior Vice President of Commercial Affairs at Princess Cruises).

“This is a service that an increasing number of passengers expect to find onboard our ships. MCP has been very good to work with, particularly in respect of disabling the service in the certain public areas of the ship where we prefer cell phone service not to be present."

The following link shows MCP's schedule for rolling out cell phone coverage on Princess:

And this link shows which ships already have coverage:

Hope this is of some help.
