Hello everyone. I have finally booked our cruise for our 20th wedding anniversary. We are going on the Valor from Miami. The ports are Grand Cayman, Isla Roatan, Belize and Cozumel.

Any excursions tid-bits would be greatly appreciated. Also anything cool to do in Miami that you really liked?

I would also love to hear which places you could skip the excursions that Carnival has and do something on your own to save money and maybe even see or do something that is unexpected.

Anything you can share about this trip would be great to hear!

Thanks

Hello,

I went on Legend last month in a group of six and we had the same itinerary. Here are my thoughts on each port.

Cozumel:

My wife and I did not book an excursion. We took a cab downtown ($7 USD regardless of the number of people in the cab), shopped and went to Margaritaville (awesome food and Margaritas). There is another Margaritaville in Grand Cayman and it pales in comparison. Worst margaritas I have ever had and food was so so. Anyway, my wife and I really enjoyed Cozumel

Belize:

The have the second largest barrier reef in the world and we snorkeled there. It was amazing (this was an excursion we booked thru Carnival) Snorkeling was at the Manatee research center, where you will not see any manatees. This excursion was phenomenal, there is so much life on the reef, it was like snorkeling in an aquarium. I saw a ton of fish, two squid, a sting ray and an octopus.

Belize was a tender port and this was interesting. We were tendered from our ship directly to our excursion. Also, our cruise director warned us to be extremely careful in Belize and suggested that we do not disembark unless we were on an excursion. She also told us "Do not take a cab or you will get taken". That said, we found the people on our excursion to be fantastic and I would love to do that again. Excursion was around $70.00 per person

Isla Roatan:

We had booked the Dolphin encounter and Beach excursion and the Dolphin portion was cancelled by weather (this was the second time we had a Dolphin excursion cancelled by weather). Half of our group went to the beach all day and the rest of us hired a cab and rode around the island for about an hour. It is quite scenic in Roatan but there is a lot of poverty.

Grand Cayman:

It sounds cheesy, be we did the Pirate encounter and it was awesome (probably the most fun we had). Cayman is another tender port (this has meaning later) and we were tendered from the ship to shore where we met for the Pirate encounter. We walked to the Pirate ship and sailed toward Legend. We then fired mock cannons at Legend (you should have heard the people on the tender scream- it was hilarious). Six of the people on our ship where then forced to swab the deck (and they were hit with buckets of water by our pirates). The pirates then tied a lady to one of the posts and proceeded to dump an ice cold bucket of water on her (all the while taunting her with her husband- she was a great sport). We then dropped anchor and we could force anyone to walk the plank (water was about 5M deep). We then swam (one of the pirates threw a mask and snorkel to me so I made it another snorkeling adventure) and we got to stay in the water for about an hour. We could jump of the plank or off the back of the ship (it was about 20ft above the water). We then climbed back in the boat and sailed to shore. Of course, there were unlimited free soft drinks (Coke and Sprite), water and Rum Punches (I had a few of these). This excursion was less than $50.00 per person and again, it was so much fun.

We finished the excursion early and went to Margaritaville (worst Margaritas I have ever had- I had banana and it was not drinkable. My friend had Mango and it was as sour as any lemon I ever had). That said, as a group, we were pretty hammered when we left Margaritaville (had to be the Rum Punches w/ the Pirates). After Margaritaville, we still had about an hour so we went to the 7 mile beach. I was really awestruck by the beauty of Grand Cayman.

I have been on Valor and let me give you some advice. There are two dining rooms, so the only way to really go from one end of the ship to the other unobstructed is to use the Promenade Deck. This can be very frustrating when you are going from one end to the other to partake in some sort of activity. (We live in Nevada and my wife hates walking through the "smokey" casino). Anyway, Valor is a very nice ship and you should have a wonderful time.

Thanks,
JTC

Thanks for the great information! The Pirate ship sounds fun. I will be careful with the margaritas! I am afraid to drink anything that isn't bottled in Mexico, but maybe I am wrong. I had heard that Honduras was the dangerous, but hadn't heard about Belize.

Thanks for the tip on navigating through the ship. I have only been on one cruise and that was with my sister a few years ago. We were on the Carnival Paradise and it wasn't until the last night that we figured out a better way to walk around that place. It's really amazing how complex the ships are.

This time, I plan to board as early as possible when it's not so busy and walk around and get our bearings.

I am so excited about this trip! I can't wait!

In Belize at the the Manatee Reserve, do you swim with the manatees? Or are they in an aquarium and you observe them?

Actually, it is none of the above.

The Manatee preserve is in open water. Not out in the ocean though. There are lots of mangroves and your boat will take you through the channels among the mangroves. The first time we did not see any manatee but it was still an awesome boat ride. The second time we did see manatee which made it even better. We saw dolphins both times.
