Vancouver Restaurants

My wife and I are doing northbound Alaska next month with one night in Vancouver. Our neighbors are from there and we asked them where they would eat if they only had one day and both answered Bishops (bishopsonline.com). It has a more limited menu (6-8 entrees) but they said the food and service were very good. Their second close choice was The Cannery (canneryseafood.com) with a larger menu of mostly seafood (duh). I think we will pick the Cannery since it's closer to our hotel.

Both menus appear up-scale from the prices. Here in the UP we can get a great breakfast for $3 so higher price doesn't always equate to good. Since we haven't been to either yet, we'd also be interested in hearing other opinions.

Thank you! We aren't going until the first of Sept. If it isn't too much trouble, maybe you can report back about where you went and what you enjoyed, etc. Any other tips on Vancouver would be appreciated as well!

We just recently spent two nights in Vancouver prior to our cruise. I don't remember the names of the restaurants we ate at, but wouldn't recommend either of them anyway. I do suggest you exchange your money for the Canadian currency. Most places will know off a little for using US money, but you usually end up getting cheated, and the change you get back is always in Canadian. We ended up giving all the Canadian money we had left to the taxi driver that took us to the terminal so we weren't stuck with it anyway.

What about using your credit card for purchases in Vancouver? Better exchange rate?

We just got back from our cruise and had a day before and and a day after in Vancouver. Try Il Porto Restaurant on Water Street in Gastown. Very good Italian menu. They have fire-baked pizza which was great. For the a great diner-type restaurant try Ricky's Urban Diner. IT's located in the Food Court directly actoss the street from Canada Place, next to the Fairmont Hotel. We ate a late brekfast there the morning we departed and it was great. In fact, it was so good we ate dinner there the day we returned. There were four of us and each ordered something different and all the entrees were great.

How about restaurants in Stanley Park? What about eating on Granville Island? Anyone done this?

Last time we were in Vancouver we had lunch at Bridges on Granville Island. Very nice indeed. If you are in that area you might want to try the Kalamata Greek Taverna at 478 W Broadway. It's just a small hole in the wall but the food is very good. (I will qualify that by saying when DH was there about a month ago he came home saying it wasn't as good as it had been in the past though it was still very satisfactory. I'm hoping it was just an abberation :) )

Granville Island actually has quite a few good places to eat.. Bridges is just one. Go for the day... walk around and pickout your place for dinner. Stanley Park has two good places .. for dinner and a couple of beach take aways. A new restaurant just opened up in a beach house over in Kits also. (Across the bridges south and out towards UBC) Ask at your hotel. The "Fish House" is awesome.

Just got back from RCI Vision cruisetour (July 22 - Aug 1). Spent evening of July 21 in Vancouver and ate at the Cannery Seafood as recommended by neighbors from Vancouver. It is a $CDN13 cab ride each way from downtown. The service, view, and ambinece are top notch, as are the prices. My wife and I had several drinks, soup, entree, and dessert and it was about $CDN150 with tip. I found the food to be under-seasoned for my taste. My wife thought it was fine for her. The seafood was fresh and well-prepared, not over-cooked.

Perhaps the best part of the experinece was the fact that someone was obviously trying to sell tug boats to their guests. A tug was maybe a hundred feet from the restaurant doing a "performance". I've never seen a tug boat go sideways or do donuts before and this was very entertaining for all. I have no specific complaints but will try elsewhere the next time.
