Veendam!!

I heard a rumor that in April the Veendam will be in drydock and they are to remove the wading pool and put in a regular Pool.
(Thats what Calgon1 said). I have not heard of any changes to be done. Is there any truth to it!!

yes -- quite true

there have been many problems with the cabins below this "retreat" area -- the water had to be removed as it was constantly leaking into the new cabin below

also they can't seem to keep the small tiles glued into place

several people have fallen in that 3 inch of messy water

and people complained that they had to take off their shoes to get to the loungers in that water -- and then once they got to those loungers there were not enough tables to place their items on so they had to hold their shoes, bags, etc -- after all -- who wants to put their stuff down in the water?

This has been known for a LONG time, plastered all over another board with the usual sensationalism. Yes, Veendam is scheduled for drydock prior to our cruise.

I had been ASSURED by HAL that the leakage problem to the deck(s) below had been addressed, or I would NOT have allowed any aft cabins to be booked or remain booked.

it was costly to add that retreat

now it will be costly to undo the damage for a bad idea

Funny....before I read this, I had gone to HAL's site and found out that Veendam is not scheduled for any cruises between 4/15/11, when she arrives in Fort Lauderdale after an 18 day South America cruise and 5/1/11, which is the first Bermuda cruise. I'm guessing that's the drydock time.

So, even if they slip a little in the timing of her return, it won't affect the Duckies! :spyglass:

Innocent - This was the first I heard of it. I think Mr. Earl has his goof-balls mixed up. Do appreciate the heads up though as there is one couple on 'the other board' with a cabin that is possibly on the list for elimination. Got the wurd to them and they'll be contacting their TA this morning.

All the more reason for having at good TA, as opposed to someone who is just a "cabin reseller" or, even worse, doing it yourself. Need someong to keep tabs on what's going on and to advocate for the client. Hopefully they aren't affected, but, if they are I'm fairly sure that HAL will make sure they get an equal (if not better) cabin and location.

This is the first I have heard about removing that retreat area, but I will say that it never looked like a good idea at all. I have not been on Veendam, yet, but I did not see how the logistics of trying to keep everything dry that I would bring with me to such an area would work successfully. I wasn't even thinking about underlying cabins being affected! (Time to call TA...ASAP!) I had noticed that there was a gap in Veendam's schedule, but I assumed that perhaps she was chartered during that time. Very glad this is all happening BEFORE my cruise! Has anyone found specific info about exactly what will be done in the yard? I can't imagine that HAL will sacrifice cabin space in the process of righting this wrong, but if they plan to replace the retreat with a real pool, that might be necessary. Looks like I have my morning activities cut out for me now...I might have one of the questionable cabins!

the original big pool was located on the navigation deck

when hal decided to add this retreat -- they took out the old pool and added more cabins in that area

this new retreat is located on the lido deck -- one deck up

Thanks for the heads -- I have been following the Veendam for years as she was our experience cruising

Quoting Calgon1 from the CC board roll call

I just learned that the Veendam will be going into drydock in April. They will be removing the Retreat (wading) pool. It seems there have been problems with leaks, etc. They will be replacing it with the original style (swimming) pool. This will eliminate some of the cabins on Verandah deck.

$$$$$$$

that should never have been spent in the first place

they also did the same thing to the rotterdam

I assume HAL has learned its lesson now. Too bad some cabins have to go in order to get a pool put in again, but the displaced occupants should get some nice upgrades as a result. That Retreat idea just did not look appealing to me, glad HAL gave up on it before another ship had that unfortunate refit.

the cabins that are being removed were ones that had been added when during that rehab

when the decision was made that the retreat (a few months ago) had to go -- hal blocked out those cabins so that after the newest refit no one could book them

so no one will be moved or given any kind of a deal

Ya mean, they actually planned ahead? What a concept! Just wish more folks and companies would try that.

Oh well, MsBuster - Looks like you're not going to be gettin' that upgrade ... Bummer!

Dang! I wasn't planning on HAL being so well prepared for this refit! I think everything is going to be OK anyway and I will still have a good cabin. Counting down the days...
