Venezuela - La Guaira

Haven't been there for a few years. I wonder if any cruise lines will be stopping there now due to the unrest in Caracas. You know there has been a lot of civil unrest in Venezuela the last few months and weeks and I wouldn't think the cruise lines would risk this as a port now.

Apparently, they are still going. Was told trouble is hours away from ship dock.

I don't know how accurate that info. about the trouble being "hours" away from the dock may be. The cruise ships use the commercial dock at La Guaira. This area, unless it has changed drastically in the last 2-3 years, is basically a major seaport and has little in the way of tourist shops, etc. To take the tours, see the sights, etc., you have to go into the countryside or to the capitol of Caracas. As stated, I haven't been there recently and possibly things have changed.

Just check it out yourself and go with how you feel. I would go back if I had the chance and provided there were not any civil unrest, strikes, etc.

Thanks for the info - what did you do there. How far is it to a beach? Did you go to mount avilia - how far is that. What suggestions do you have for us to do - we'll have a 9 year old with us. I talked to tour operator again and they said they are still docking there.

We took a tour into Caracas, visited the Capitol Bldg., spent some time downtown shopping, went to a very nice hotel for lunch and went to a museum.
As there were only two of us, we really didn't look into what to do with children.
The travel time from the dock to Caracas is approx. an hour ( give or take a few). About the same for Mt. Avilia. I really can't remember anything re/ the beaches.
Have fun and enjoy.
