Video Cameras in the Humidity

Hello,

We have a Sony Handycam and on our last cruise, the humidity would make it register that moisture was in the camera and it would shut off and we would have to leave it in our room for hours to dry out enough to work again. We could only use it inside for our entire trip.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a lost cause?

It happens to us every time. If you have a balcony try leaving it outside to adjust to the temp. Not a whole lot you can do.

A lot of the problem stems from moving between the cool (and reasonably dry) air of the ship and your cabin and the hot humid air of the Caribbean.

There are several things you can try, one has already been suggested, leave it in the bag, take the lens cap off and put the whole thing out on the balcony if available) with the bag unzipped. If you store it with the tape out, try using a small silicon pack (typically called moisture munchers) in side. You can get them at a good camera shop or a dive shop. To keep the lens from fogging, you can get lens or glass cleaner in small spray bottles that prevents fogging. Try a camera shop or an eyeglass shop like Lenscrafters.

we have a 6 year old panasonic video recorder, I have had this problem in Florida and Jamaica. Open the cassette door, and lay it open on its side and blow dry with at low temp for 20 minutes or so. It worked for me!!!

Same problem here. It's so frustrating! We have been getting up in the AM and putting the camera on the balcony right away. We have missed some great video because of this problem.

We tried the blow dryer thing to no avail on our last cruise. We were so frustrated! We had walked the whole ship going in and outdoors when we boarded and it worked perfectly. Then at sailaway 5 hours later, suddenly the thing beeped and shut down. Then everytime we took it outside from then on it would do it and not resolve until about the next day.

It's such a bummer of a problem. Here you are in paradise - a place many people only ever dream of going. And you can't take a video. I have to stop - I am getting upset just thinking about it.

Well this is all great information. My husband and I sailed the Caribbean in April with a video camera we borrowed. We had no problems. We plan on buying one of the newere DVD video cameras in time for our next trip. I hope we don't have this problem.

Time to go digital. It's a lost cause. I have a low end ($200) digital still that takes video (no sound) But you would need a lot of memory to take a lot of video. And memory aint cheap.
