Virus on Grandeur

We are due to sail on the Grandeur in about 3 weeks.....someone read today that they had an outbreak of the Norwalk Virus this past week with about 100 people getting sick. I have looked for a news story about it but haven't been able to find one. Does anyone know about this and how will that affect our cruise....are there any precautions we could take before we go to make sure we stay healthy? Thanks!!

my girlfriend and i were on the cruise when it happened. it wasn't as big of a deal as it is made out to be, although i wasn't directly involved with anyone that got sick. the outbreak was fairly early in the cruise, early enough for the captain and medical staff to implement precautions to stop the spread. they had a full time staff that was constantly disenfecting the handrails on the stairs and elevator buttons, and they put manditory instant hand sanitizer outside all restaurants. my only reccomendation would be to be very safe on the ship, washing your hands often and not touching handrails, etc. the staff did a good job at containing the outbreak. we got off the ship at 8:00 this morning (saturday) and there was another cruise that was set to board this afternoon. the real indicator will be to see if the next group of passengers gets sick also. my guess would be that they will not, it seemed from the talks that the captain gave us over the announcement system and the extra doctors they took on in cozumel that they were very serious about eliminating the virus.

This is a repeat from my original post to Corky on the main page.

Corky,

We were on this cruise as well. There were a LOT more people sick than reported by the media, simply because they didn't go down to the infirmary. Or after they went down and read the instructions on how they could be isolated and/or the other consequences of reporting their illness, they left without treatment.

This was our 2nd cruise. We were on the Sovereign in September. We had a wonderful time and expected the same from this cruise. We were as disappointed as you and we will not be cruising again anytime in the near future.

I could not believe how DIRTY this ship was. That was the first thing we noticed. There was someone always cleaning the common areas (especially the handrails, doorknobs, etc.) on the Sovereign. Not so on the Grandeur. The buffet area was filthy. TWICE I slipped and almost fell on the floor simply because they didn't bother to mop up after people spilled. The food was only half-cooked. I saw a college kid (girl surprisingly) that dropped the tongs on the floor. She looked left and right to see who was watching and was going to put them BACK IN THE FOOD when I looked at her and said, "Don't you DARE put them back. Give them to one of the workers."

Finally, after the 2nd day when everyone got sick, they started to actually clean the ship. If you ask me a little prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I was one of the lucky ones who didn't get sick but DH did. He, like you, had only a mild case of it. We talked to others who had the same. Personally, I think a lot of folks had food poisoning from the improper handling of food and not the norovirus. On the last night of the cruise, I lucked out and got diarrhea. Then the toilet in our cabin broke on departure morning so I had to use the bathroom in the Schooner lounge. We called maintenance but they never showed.

I hopped on the internet on Deck 8 to access this site and post a warning on Wednesday but this site as well as others related to cruising were completely blocked.

You couldn't pay me to cruise on this ship again. They need to take it out of circulation for a week or more and do a thorough cleaning of the entire ship. Otherwise, this is going to keep happening. If I had known the shape this ship was in I would have cancelled and done something else for my vacation.

I hope you feel better.

RMW - I do NOT mean to panic you with this post. This is my opinion and mine alone. They may just clean this ship top to bottom in the weeks before your cruise. Duttysean's hand washing advice is the best. I am very big on handwashing and limited my touching of the ship rails and common areas etc. I believe that is why I didn't catch the virus. It was more widespread than they indicated in the media because there were lots of people who became ill for a short period of time and did not report it. And yes, once everyone got sick, the staff did do a good job of containing the outbreak. I only wish they had done the cleaning BEFORE I got on the ship. If I were you I would make sure I monitored what the next set of passengers from Grandeur says before I make a decision on whether or not to cancel. Good luck.

It is always interesting that one person says it was NOT wide spread and someone else say EVERYONE got sick...... I have been on Grandeur of the Seas, and saw nothing that was dirty. To each his/or her own. I would sail on any Royal Caribbean ship, anytime, anywhere..... And the funny part is, because of knee problems, I hold on to every railing, on steps, in elevators, and have never gotten sick (that is after 21 cruises)........

We sailed on the Grandeur last March, primarily because it was an RCI cruise that was on the HOT deals list when we were looking for a nice cheap getaway. Now, I have been on 4 other RCI ships (Empress, Sovereign, Voyager and Serenade) and compared to those the Grandeur was the worst in terms of cleanliness. It was subtle differences like , handprints on the glass of the windows and elevators, the tablecloths would have a stain on them, there would be dishes with finished meals just lying around the pooldeck for hours, etc. No one got sick or anything, but on other ships it always seemed like that the crew made a point of making a clean presentation. I wouldn't say I would never sail on her again, but I would defintely choose another ship over her if I had a chance. Just my two cents.

YES!!!! Cruiserfox you are so right! You hit the nail on the head. I truly believe that they will find out that this was more a food poisoning incident than a norovirus incident. If you read my reply to Corky's "We're home!" thread you will see what I mean.

Since we had such an excellent first cruising experience on the Sovereign that is what I will want and expect on any future cruises. I'm sorry but this was NOT a clean ship. Our cabin steward was excellent though and our cabin was immaculate all the time. Unless they clean or refurbish this ship I would not sail on it again not even if I was given the cruise for free.
