I would recommend you do it on your own.  If you like volcanos, make sure you go to Haleakala in Maui.  I think it's much more beautiful than the Volcano National Park (where you probably would just be driving a loop and some very short hikes).  Read my review on Pride of America.. it has tonnes of info.. but do consider Haleakala
