Can anyone advise me if walkie talkies are effective at all aboard ship? Thank you.

We used them whenever we took our grandaugher on a cruise. However, we didn't use the ones the ship has. My SIL let us use the ones from his work. They were very effective.

Thank you Connie. I think I will take a pair along on an upcoming cruise. I will be considerate of other passengers, same as would be expected using a cell phone in a public area.

Lots of people on the airwaves on the ships, so you have to find a channel that will work for you.

Funny, because you keep hearing kids on the walkie-talkies.....Mom? Mom? Mom?......and there I was answering them all by mistake :)

We have had 2 sets of Talkies and both have been handy. My one recommendation would be to make sure U get a decent set with many channels and a good distance (mile) rating as they tend to work best. qwe have a set of the Motorola 6000 series with 12 mile range and over 40 channels to choose from. They are far betetr than our 1st set and come in handy even when communications is required between shore and the ship. They also are beneficial in that U will have less dead zones within the ship as the cheaper models tend to have more due to ALL the steel within the structure of the ship. This may seem NO biggee but when U are in cabin and someone is out on deck it becomes important. :thumb

I agree with everybody. They do work, it's the person operating the walkie talkie you have to worry about! My husband told a female voice that he was going into port in St. Bart's while my 3 kids and I looked all over the ship for him! When we finally checked at the information desk, they looked in the computer and saw he had disembarked. Later when we finally caught up to each other (we actually passed on two different launches as he came back from the island) he told me, "But I told you I was going ashore and you said ok". Well it wasn't me! So perhaps code names are in order!
