Walkie Talkies on Cruise ships

HI Everyone - I am going on my first cruise (Glory - April 22nd) with my 11 year old daughter - I was thinking that it might be a good idea to bring a set of Walkie-talkies with us so that she could let us know if she wanted to be picked up from an activity, or in case of an emergency. I am sure that others have had the same idea, just wondering how well they work on the ship. Any tips on which kind to get?

Thanks a bunch!

My Cobras work just fine aboard ship, even inside. They've been really helpful keeping my wife and I in touch during our last few cruises since we usually like to attend different activities and get together in between or afterwards. Just be sure to use them discreetly and respectfully so as not to bother others who do not like them. We keep ours off while the activity is going on and turn them on afterwards in a public space where they won't interrupt anyone's performance.

Thanks for the tip... do you find a lot of other people are using them (or have them) also?

I find that on cruises that have a lot of families with kids you see a lot more walkies than you do on ships filled mainly with adults. Since your cruise is while school is still in session you may not see as many as you would in the summer months.

You may want to get some particular models that members have used that worked for them. I asked this question and purchased a couple motorola units and they did not work well for us at all. At least not if we were inside, I am sure that we didn't get powerful enough units and had we to do it over again I would have asked for model numbers so I would have purchased something that I knew would work. Live and learn... :)

We purchased Cobra's while on the Inspiration during our first cruise. We paid I think close to $100 for them on the ship, and I think they had a 1 mile range (this was good back in 2002!!) They worked great on the ship, but had a little harder time with them on the larger ships like Grand Princess and Conquest but they still got the job done. We found often that we had to change frequency because we got alot of other peoples messages too.

Many will argue that they are noisey and an intrusion, however we were always trying to be considerate of others (say in the auditoriums we would turn volume down and go outside to talk, etc etc....basically using cell phone courtacy :)
