Walkie Talkies

Hi fellow cruisers!

If anyone here has had a good experience with their walkie talkie while on board
a ship, would you be kind enough to post your pros and cons as well as the make
and model number of your unit? We're shopping for a set of radios.

It' been established that families should have a code word that lets everyone know
they are speaking to the right person. For example the husband who told a "female voice"
that he was going off the ship while in port and it was acknowledged... but it was the wrong voice!
Meanwhile his family was scouring the ship looking for him!

So... good walkie talkie experiences and the make and model # of those good ones please!!

I have thought about it but never done it. Not only do I have a duck attached to my butt but also a cell phone 24/7 at home. On vacation I put on enough weight from the beverages and food that I dont want anything else. :lol But on the other hand now that cell phones do work on the ship in certain areas, that if I want dh to find me I guess we could go that route.

I have seen people use walkie talkies but not in all areas of the ship, like casino, dining room, lounges. They are the Motorola talkabout, not sure of the model number. They are a good idea if traveling with kids as long as they dont get abused. DH and I have our routine on the ship that eventually we do meet up. As long as he doesnt "fall off" the ship.(I dont have enough life insurance on him for me to lead a life I want to become accustomed to)

Try posting on the community forum. Hopefully someone can chime in who has used them on other cruise lines.

Having a code word is a very good idea.

We are cruising on FOS in November with our grandson Henry (1 year old) and his parents.
Given the size of this ship.. we thought radio communication might be worthwhile.

Using cell phones for this purpose would probably cost considerably more than purchasing a set of 4 walkie talkies!!!

Here is the specs that RCI has on their websight. Not sure if this will help you with specific models that are avaiable.

Dect phones (portable phones) are available to rent for $25.00 a week on Radiance and Voyager class vessels. Guests may reserve a set at the Guest Relations Desk, (price is subject to change). Guests are also allowed to have two-way radios, more commonly know as walkie-talkies, for onboard personal communications. Basic specifications are as follows: Up to 10-mile coverage range, Up to 5 watts power, Internal Voice, Operated Transmission, No external mounting antenna.

WOW !!!!!! That's on their website????
They actually list specs of walkie talkies allowed... I'm totally impressed!
(hardly anyone even makes 10 mile or less radios anymore... most are 12-14 mile and up)

I have found a very nice set of 4 Uniden radios with chargers and NiCad batteries for $60 on ebay.
I just might purchase those but first I must look into those Motorola Talkabouts you mentioned.
Thanks Suer... and say hi to the ducky from us.

One other thing...

Walkie talkie users should be considerate of others. It is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me (and Susan too) when we're kicking back in a deck chair and the people next to us have their walkie talkies blaring at high volume :nono

Just like the Nextel phones(you know the ones where you hear the conversations)..hate those........

We used walkie talkies our very first cruise(the talkabouts).............havent used them since.......we just arrange to meet somewhere or leave a voice mail message on the cabin phone...

Voice messaging to the cabin would work great for us if we could retrieve a message
from elsewhere on the ship. I doubt that's an option though.
We simply need to do a "Where are you?" "Ok let's meet at..." every now and then.
I see absolutely no reason to keep them on and blaring all the time!!!!
